Riverside Girls Win One, Lose Won
Defeat isn’t something the Riverside Girl’s basketball team has experienced much this season. The team started with a seven-game winning streak briefly interrupted by Neshannock before going on an eight-game streak.
The last game in that streak was against Laurel in a home conference game on Monday, when Riverside won 79-50. Katie Stang and Sydney Wolf both broke 20 points, scoring 23 and 20, with the other half of Riverside’s point distributed among eight players.
However, the girls’ second winning streak game to an end in an away game yesterday at Beaver Falls. Although they had previously defeated Beaver Falls, Riverside lost 56-45.
High scorers for the girls were Katie Stang, 21, and Jordan Annarumo, 10.
Riverside ends the week 15-2 overall and 7-2 in their conference. They host Neshannock on Monday in an important conference game, as both teams have lost only two game according to the most recent records obtained.
Ellwood City Girls Lose Two, Win One
The Ellwood City girls basketball team lost to Central Valley and Blackhawk in conference games this week, while defeating Shenango in a non-conference game.
On Monday, the Lady Wolverines fought tooth and nail with Central Valley in a game that saw two overtime periods. However, Central Valley broke ahead by 8-2 to end the game. Three Ellwood players exceeded 10 points: Allie McKelvey, 14, Emily Brown, 12, and Karrington Ketterer, 10.
On Wednesday, the girls hosted Shenango, winning a close game 41-37. Scoring remained even throughout the game, except in the second quarter when Ellwood pulled ahead 12-6. Ketterer collected over half of Ellwood’s points, with 21 altogether, including nine free throws. Sophomore Breonna Streit made two three-pointers.
The Lady Wolverines completed this week’s games by hosting Blackhawk yesterday in a 69-33 loss. Ketterer and Natalie Greco were the high scorers with nine points each.
The Ellwood City girls are now 6-11 overall and 3-7 in their conference. They travel to Beaver on Monday, Jan. 25 for a conference game.
Ambridge Defeats Ellwood City Boys
Ambridge narrowly pulled ahead of Ellwood City in a conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 19, winning 68-63.
The first half ended 32-31 in Ellwood’s favor, but Ambridge was able to get a five point lead by the end of the game.
High scorers for Ellwood were Anthony Roth, 17, Ethan Fotia, 16, and Rick Roth, 14.
The boys travel to Beaver Falls today.
