The Top 10 Stories of 2015, Part 1

In following previous years’ tradition, EllwoodCity.org brings the calendar to a close with the top 10 most popular stories of 2015. Today is Part 1 in a 2-part series. Inmetco Fire Under ControlCTTCYFwXIAEFJGo

The Inmetco fire created a smoke cloud so big it is rumored to have been visible from West Virginia. Emergency responders from all over the area rushed to the scene and firefighters spent almost three days putting out the fire. Over fifteen fire departments were involved.

DEP personnel on the scene determined the fire didn’t pose a public health threat, although the smoke did create a horrific stench.

In the wake of the fire, residents asked Ellwood City Borough Council if the borough could adopt a better means of communicating emergency information and if any steps will be taken to ensure another fire doesn’t break out at Inmetco.

Former Police Chief Sues Borough

Two years ago, Ellwood City council eliminated the chief of police position, subsequently firing police chief Mark Romutis. The decision was not without controversy and visitors questioned council’s decision in subsequent meetings.

This past October, Romutis filed a wrongful termination lawsuit against the borough with four claims totaling $140,000. As of now, the lawsuit is still in development.

Ellwood’s own B-horror movie, “Bigfoot the Movie,” launched this year and creator Jared Show described his experienced with making a movie in his home town. The movie featured local talent such as Curt Wootton (Pittsburgh Dad) and fashion model Joanie Dodds and local establishments such as the Oak Grove Inn and Hazel Manor.

Show supported the movie with a summer long tour through the greater western Pennsylvania region, including operating a booth during the Ellwood City Arts & Crafts Festival and a screening in Ewing Park. Borough council declared May 26 through June 6 Bigfoot week.

 

Ellwood City Teachers Threaten Strike on Tuesday!Strike

Following almost four months of failed negotiations, Ellwood City teachers were ready to exercise their right to strike. It would have been the first time in district history. On the night of Oct. 12, parents, students and teachers were still uncertain if there would be school the next day.

Fortunately, the school board and Education Association reached an agreement that night and in November, the finalized contract was approved and publicized.

Former Ellwood Resident Purchases Jacqueline House

Although the topic bed and breakfast is in New Wilmington, the owner is a former Ellwood City resident, and readers were enamored with the Victorian promise of relaxation and luxury.

  2. They fired the chief of police? I feel like more areas need to do that. At least, if the news is to be believed… :/
