Try-Outs for Ellwood City’s First Competitive Cheer Program

Nikki DeLuca, a local competitive gymnastic coach at Diamond Dance Academy, is excited to be bringing Ellwoodian youth their first opportunity to participate in a competitive all-star cheer program.

DeLuca will be the head coach of the Ellwood City Explosion All Star Cheer. The Explosion squads will be tailored for any level youth between the ages 5-18, and the cheer group will be co-ed.

DeLuca says the all-star competitive group will take local cheerleading “to a whole new level.”

“All star cheering is different than school cheering in several ways,” she says. “Not only are the squads bigger – consisting of at least 20 members, but competitive cheer isn’t limited like school squads are on performing stunting and tumbling due to liabilities.”

All-star cheering also promises a wide variety of competition from across the nation, not just the same local teams.

DeLuca has high hopes for the team, and while she expects a decent amount of girls to sign up, she hopes to see some males on the roster too.

“I think a lot of guys believe there is a stereotype with cheerleading, when really it’s a co-ed sport. Men are some of the best cheer performers – always bringing their own set of awing skills to the teams performance,” she stated.

As with all competitive all-star teams there is a sign up fee, however, their official press release states that everyone can still participate because EC Explosion has an extensive fundraising program to assist with fees of competition and tuition expenses.

The team will run two mandatory fundraisers a year and any other is your choice to reduce competition/tuition expenses with money raised through the fundraisers.

“In my past experience, I have seen families pay their entire year of competition fees with one fundraiser,” DeLuca said.

Ellwood City Explosion All Star Cheer will be hosting their open houses on Friday, March 31 from 4:30p.m.-8p.m. and April 1, from 1p.m.-4p.m. at 310 1st Street, Ellwood City, PA. You will be able to see where the teams will be training, meet the staff, and collect registration information.

Evaluation clinics will be held on Sunday April 9 and 23, 2-4p.m. for ages 5-11, and 4:30-6:30p.m. for ages 12-18. Make up evaluations will be scheduled as needed.

Official tryouts will be April 30, 2-4p.m. ages 4-11, and 4:30-6:30 ages 12-18.
