Riverside, Ellwood City Students to Appear on KDKA’s High Q

On Saturday, October 21, 2017, students from Riverside and Ellwood were at KDKA studios, One Gateway Center in Pittsburgh, for the taping of Home Town High Q. Ellwood students Molly McCommons, Kyle Smith and Noah Rinker and Riverside students Morgan Deiseroth, Ari Kendra and Colby Belczyk represented the schools in the competition. Riverside competed alongside Ellwood City against Waynesburg. The students compete against the rival teams by answering questions over subjects taught in school, similar to how Jeopardy is played. The Senior/Parent Recognition Night will be taking place on October 20 and the schedule of events is as following: 6:00 – Parents/escorts arrive at Helling Stadium (please report to the end zone by the baseball field) 6:15 – Parents and athletes will be aligned alphabetically beginning with the football team 6:30 – Pre-game show Marching Blue Band 6:40 – Introduction of parents and athletes 7 – Riverside vs. Ellwood City

Derry Has Success in Run Game, Cruises Past Wolverines

The Wolverines have had issues with keeping players on the field throughout the year due to lingering injuries. The same occurred Friday night as three starters were injured during a conference game match-up against favorited Derry Trojans. Derry came into the evening with only loss to conference foe Elizabeth Forward. The Wolverines came into the game hoping to pick up their third win on the season in preparation of upcoming rival Riverside. Lincoln Graduate Gets First Career Sack Against Cornell

Nicholas Ioanilli, Lincoln graduate of 2016 is now attending Colgate and playing for their football team as a middle linebacker. Last week, Colgate squared up against Cornell, leaving the opposing team in the dust with a final score of 21-7. Ionanilli was excited about his first sack. “It felt so good –really amazing! Tickets for the Ellwood City vs. Beaver football game on Friday will be sold in the main office Thursday and Friday. It is Ellwood City’s Homecoming. All tickets sold at the gate are $5.00. Wolverine Football Players Face Suspension After Incident Last Friday

Some Ellwood City football players will be facing suspension after a brawl last Friday night following the football game versus Valley. According to an article on New Castle News, Principal Kirk Lape stated the school was notified by the PIAA that players had been disqualified from the contest with Valley and will now be required to sit out Friday’s home game against Beaver. Lape, athletic director Curt Agostinelli, and head coach Nick Hand will be meeting with Valley and WPIAL officials to further discuss the incident. At this time it is unclear which individuals have been suspended.

PHOTOS: Alex’s Lemonade Stand Competition

Last Friday, a teacher from Ellwood City and Beaver Falls squared against each other in a football-tossing challenge, called Alex’s Lemonade Stand, to raise awareness and money for childhood cancer. The fundraising idea came from Cara Atkinson, leader of the Hope Club at Ellwood City, who said the outcome was definitely worth it and that she hopes to do it again next year. Ellwood won raising $982 and Beaver Falls raised $502. $300 was raised at the game and Ellwood continued their fundraising all this week to hopefully reach a final goal of $2,000. Lemon Toss Challenge: “More Than Just a Fundraiser”

As part of childhood cancer awareness month, two local teachers have decided to take part in raising awareness and funds for the cause by organizing a lemon toss challenge at the Wolverines, Beaver Falls football game this evening.
