Football Recaps: Panthers Blowout Lancers; Wolverines Fall To Serra Catholic

Both local schools were hosts in high school football action Friday night, the last Friday of August, with Riverside easily dismissing the Neshannock Lancers 45-14 while the Ellwood City Wolverines were on the losing end of a 24-14 contest against Serra Catholic. For Riverside, the Panthers continued strong offensive play that dates back to last season – scoring 31 points in the second quarter and scoring on their opening possession of the second half to evoke the mercy rule. REPORT: Wolverine Football hoping to take advantage of move down to Class-2A

According to a publish report this week by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Tri-State Sports & News Service, Ellwood City football will be looking to take advantage of a WPIAL reclassification this year. The offense returns eight starters, including QB Ryan Gibbons (5-10, 170, So., QB), while the defense will return seven starters, including senior LB Coulton Cunningham (5-9, 175, Sr., OL-MLB).  A trio of running backs also return for the Wolverines as Rick Petrelli, Rocco Sesti and Donovan Chambers will lead the charge. EC Football Booster Monthly Meeting Scheduled For March 6

The Ellwood City Football Boosters will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 7:00 pm at the Lincoln High School class room 120. If you are a parent, relative, or supporter of an Ellwood City Junior High or Senior High Football player for the upcoming 2018 Football season you are invited to attend. Please make time to join us. Donations Sought for Ellwood City Football Team

Lincoln High School’s football team is seeking donations of some items to help the department. Nick Hand, head football coach, said the following items are needed for the field house at Helling Stadium — a washer and dryer, shower size towels, hand soap and shampoo. Anyone willing to help can contact Mr. Hand at 724-674-1181 or bring items to the high school office or field house.

PHOTOS: Riverside retains “Riv-Ell” Cup as Panthers defeat Wolverines on Senior Night

The game of football has three phases: offense, defense, and special teams. Under each phase is a sub-phase that contributes to a victory, such as passing, rushing, turnovers, tackling, kicking, and punting. All these and more were won by the Panthers of Riverside in a one-sided, full dominant 40-0 victory Friday night. As Riverside was playing spoils to Senior Night at Helling Stadium, all Wolverines were lost on how quickly things turned during the evening. PHOTOS: Passing Games Flourish, But Bobcats Spoil Homecoming

Passing has become a focal point for the Wolverines in the past two weeks as Ellwood has had much success in the quick-strike, quick-score type of plays. Friday’s game was no pushover as well in the passing game; however, the Beaver Bobcats had their own “ace” at the quarterback position, Brodie List, who helped the Bobcats spoil the evening 57-14 on Homecoming night. Defense has always been a strong suit for the Quips of Aliquippa as once again it is in the 2017 campaign. The Wolverines came into the evening with their backs against the wall – 0-2 on the season, a 14-game losing streak, and more importantly, the defending 3A State Title team was their opponent for week 3. But when push came to shove, the Wolverines proved stronger – ousting the Tigers in commanding fashion 28-0 Friday night.
