Ellwood City, Riverside Each Fall In Season Openers

Ellwood City and Riverside each fell in their respective season openers Friday night. The Wolverines fell 43-14 to Laurel at Helling Stadium. Spartan running back Kolton Carlson collected three 2nd quarter touchdowns as Laurel exploded for 22 points to break a 7-7 tie. Carlson finished with 115 running as the Spartans posted 238 on the ground in the victory. Tyler Smiley rushed for two touchdowns and new placekicker Aiden Huth knocked home a pair of extra points for the Wolverines. Tickets On Sale For Ellwood City Home Opener Versus Laurel

Ellwood City will open its regular season next Friday versus the Laurel Spartans. Tickets for the August 22nd home football game versus Laurel can be purchased online at https://gofan.co/app/school/PA6449. Physical tickets are no longer sold in the high school office, but may be purchased at the gate at the stadium. Adult All Sports passes and Student Superfan passes can also be purchased online using the same link. On Sunday, ten Ellwood City Wolverine players were honored at the MAC Coaches Association Awards Banquet and received their All-Conference Honors. Elijah Palmer-McCane was named MAC Offensive Player of the Year. Palmer-McCane, Evan Twedell, Luciano Gagric, and Chris Smiley all received unanimous selections for their respective positions. Mayor Court Presents Proclamation To Ellwood City Football Team

Mayor Anthony J. Court recently presented a proclamation to the 2024 Ellwood City Wolverines Football Team for one of the most successful seasons in the history of the school The team finished with a remarkable 10-1 record in 2024, finishing the regular season undefeated and securing the MAC Section Title. In addition to their regular season success, the Wolverines made a deep run in the 2A W.P.I.A.L. playoffs advancing to the semifinals but ultimately losing to South Park. Mayor Court to Give Wolverines Football Team Proclamation

Mayor Anthony Court gave high praise to this year’s Ellwood City Wolverines football team. During the Ellwood City Borough Council meeting, Court said, “I want to recognize the Ellwood City football team for an amazing season.” Court said he would like to give the team a proclamation. Council as a whole agreed on the proclamation, and also acknowledged the Wolverine’s historic season. The unbeaten Wolverines season came to an end Friday night as Ellwood City was defeated by South Park 28-7 in the WPIAL Class 2A semifinals at North Allegheny High School. After gaining and early advantage the Wolverines were torched by chunk plays by the #2 seeded Eagles rushing attack who posted a resounding 376 yards rushing in its victory. Elijah Palmer-McCane tallied 150 yards of total offense and accounted for both Ellwood City scores Friday night as the Wolverines survived a scare from #6 South Allegheny and escaped with a 13-12 quarterfinals victory in the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs. Ellwood City has earned is first unbeaten regular season in 80 years after a convincing 52-0 blowout of Beaver Falls Friday night. The shutout performance was part of the senior night where sixteen Wolverine players were recognized before the game. One the game started, Ellwood City made quick work of the visiting Tigers as quarterback Chris Smiley tossed three first half touchdowns and the Wolverines raced out a 39-0 halftime advantage. A week after a low scoring slugfest between section rivals, Ellwood City and Riverside each found some offensive firepower in collecting big section wins Friday night. The ground attack was on display as Elijah Palmer McCane rushed for 192 yards and three touchdowns as Ellwood City wiped out Union 33-6 and, not to be outdone, Robbie Janis rushed for 228 yards and three touchdowns as Riverside shutout Beaver Falls 31-0. Wolverines Best Western Beaver 26-20 In Section Showdown

In a clash of conference unbeatens, Ellwood City bested Western Beaver 26-20 on the road Saturday to remain unbeaten. The win gives the Wolverines sole possession of first place in the Midwestern Conference. On Saturday, the Ellwood City offensive ground attack churned out 234 yards rushing while the Wolverine defense was opportunistic in stopping Western Beaver four times on fourth down conversion attempts.
