Ellwood City Defeats Moniteau, Riverside Falls to Shaler

Our two local high school boys basketball teams split their opening games in selective Holiday Tournaments on Thursday. Ellwood City defeated Moniteau in its opening game of a Mercer Tournament while Riverside was knocked off by Shaler Area in its opening game of a Seneca Valley holiday tournament.  Games resume today for each boys basketball team. In a tightly contest, third meeting between Riverside and Aliquippa Thursday night, a nearly half-court buzzer beating 3-pointer by Will Gipson found the bottom of the net and bounced the Panthers out of the playoffs by way of a 53-50 defeat. The Riverside boys basketball team used a strong first quarter to run away from Mohawk and claim victory in their Section 1-3A finale Tuesday while the Ellwood City Wolverines saw an slim, early lead quickly evaporate in their section finale defeat at the hands of Lincoln Park. Wolverines Defeat New Brighton, Host Riverside Friday

Ellwood City Wolverines boys basketball team won 53-34 against New Brighton on Tuesday with the help of Sean Busby, who scored team high 13 points. The Wolverines scored early, claiming a 24-12 lead at the half. Lincoln cemented their lead in the final quarter, scoring 16 points, to avenge their 2-point home loss to New Brighton in December.  Ellwood City also snapped a three game losing streak. The Ellwood City Wolverines withstood a late comeback from rival Riverside Friday night, but held on and came out victorious with a 51-48 victory. In front of a capacity crowd at the Panther gymnasium, the Wolverines took a second quarter lead and never relinquished the lead through an fast-paced final quarter. The Lady Panthers dominated New Brighton 65-22 in the Senior Night conference game held on Thursday, Feb. 4. Weekly Basketball Recap: Ellwood Overcomes 10 Point Deficit For Win Against Beaver

The Ellwood City Wolverines defeated the Beaver Bobcats 61-58 in Tuesday’s home conference game. For most of the game, it didn’t seem Ellwood City would pull through. The Wolverines were left behind as the Bobcasts outscored them 29-19 in the first half. The teams scored an even 16-16 in the third quarter, so Beaver merely had to maintain its lead for the duration of the game. Riverside and Ellwood City clashed in a high-scoring game last night at Riverside High School. Both teams were locked in an evenly-matched struggle which remained undecided until the last two seconds with a steal and two point shot by Riverside. The game ended 71-69 with the Wolverines returning home in dismay. The second quarter ended 35-34, with Riverside leading.
