Lady Wolverines Surge In Second Quarter, Race Past Riverside

The Ellwood City Lady Wolverines used a 21-1 second quarter surge to race past the visiting Riverside Panthers 45-11 Monday Night at Lincoln High School. After exchanging scores early in the first quarter, Ellwood City posted their impressive run in the second quarter taking an 8-6 advantage to a comfortable 29-7 halftime lead.  Great defense translated to multiple fast break points and layups for the Lady Wolverines. Riv-Ell Split: RHS Girls, LHS Boys Victorious

In what could amount to a collective draw between rival districts this week, the Riverside girls basketball team collected victory on Monday while the Ellwood City boys team was victorious last night. Both home teams won their host games in the Riv-Ell match-ups. For the girls, Panther Marley Wolf led all scorers with 15 points as the Lady Panthers (7-6 overall) raced out to a comfortable lead early and won 43-21 on Monday. Riverside quarterback Ben Hughes made sure his last ‘RivEll’ game would be a memorable one. The senior tossed a career-high six touchdown passes to lead the Panthers to a 49-28 victory over Ellwood City Friday night as part of Riverside homecoming festivities. The Panthers raced out to an early lead, and capped by Hughes’ third touchdown strike of the half – a 36-yard strike to Nathan Sciarro – led the Wolverines 28-0 at the half.
