Central Valley Wins 74th Ellwood City Little League Tournament; EC Finishes 3rd

Central Valley downed Laurel, 11-4, to win the 74th Ellwood City Little League Tournament on Monday night at Freidhoff Field. WKBN-TV in Youngstown, Ohio televised the game-their first broadcast ever of a Little League game in Pennsylvania. Before the game, Richie Allen, who will be inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday, was acknowleged by the Ellwood City Amateur Baseball Federation. The Ellwood City Little League celebrated its 75th Anniversary on Tuesday night. In 1950, Ellwood City became the fifth league to be chartered in Western Pennsylvania and the first in Lawrence, Beaver, Butler and Mercer Counties. Cookie Freidhoff and Dan Oliastro will be among the honored guests at the 75th Anniversary of the Ellwood City Little League Celebration on Monday night at Freidhoff Field. Ellwood City organized the first Little League program in Lawrence, Beaver, Butler and Mercer Counties-becoming one of the first five programs in western Pennsylvania in 1950. Freidhoff is the daughter of Dick Freidhoff, one of the Little League organizers and one of the original managers in 1950. Ellwood City Little League Baseball will celebrate their 75th anniversary this season. Ellwood City organized the first Little League program in Lawrence, Beaver, Butler and Mercer counties in 1950. Ellwood City along with McKeesport, Washington, Coraopolis, and Tarentum were the five leagues in western Pennsylvania that participated in the state tournament in 1950. The inaugural game of the Ellwood City Little League game was played at the Lincoln High School Field on June 6, 1950. Ellwood City Falls Short In 73rd Little League Tournament; Zito Earns Homerun Derby Crown

After collecting an opening round win on Tuesday in the 73rd Annual Little League Tournament, Ellwood City squad could not advance any further, falling twice on Saturday, first to Laurel and again to Neshannock, each by a 5-2 count that eliminated the tournament host. Neshannock earned the tournament championship with two victories over Laurel on Sunday. Wolves Down Moose 11-1 To Win Ellwood City Little League Championship

The Wolves downed the Moose, 11-1, to capture the in-house Ellwood City Little League Championship at Freidhoff Field on Tuesday night. Joe Zito powered the Wolves to the title with his arm and his bat. Zito fired a two-hitter and fanned 15 batters on the mound and rapped a triple and two doubles at the plate. After stringing together two victories to begin their tournament run, Ellwood City ran into some trouble over the weekend in the 72nd Annual Ellwood City Little League Tournament, first falling to defending tournament champion Central Valley 12-3 on Saturday and then to Neshannock on Sunday to eliminate the team from the tournament. The Ellwood City Amateur Baseball Federation will open its 74th season on Tuesday. The Moose hosts Shenango at Freidhoff Field at 6:00 p.m. in the Lawrence County Little League opener. The Ellwood City Little League, which started in 1950, was the first Little League program in Lawrence, Beaver, Butler and Mercer Counties. Ellwood City has three teams competing in the 2023 campaign: The Moose, the Lions and the Wolves in the 16-team league. Ellwood City, Neshannock and Laurel each have three entries apiece.
