After collecting an opening round win on Tuesday in the 73rd Annual Little League Tournament, Ellwood City squad could not advance any further, falling twice on Saturday, first to Laurel and again to Neshannock, each by a 5-2 count that eliminated the tournament host. The Wolves downed the Moose, 11-1, to capture the in-house Ellwood City Little League Championship at Freidhoff Field on Tuesday night. Joe Zito powered the Wolves to the title with his arm and his bat. Zito fired a two-hitter and fanned 15 batters on the mound and rapped a triple and two doubles at the plate. After stringing together two victories to begin their tournament run, Ellwood City ran into some trouble over the weekend in the 72nd Annual Ellwood City Little League Tournament, first falling to defending tournament champion Central Valley 12-3 on Saturday and then to Neshannock on Sunday to eliminate the team from the tournament. 74th Little League Season Opens Tuesday

The Ellwood City Amateur Baseball Federation will open its 74th season on Tuesday. The Moose hosts Shenango at Freidhoff Field at 6:00 p.m. in the Lawrence County Little League opener. The Ellwood City Little League, which started in 1950, was the first Little League program in Lawrence, Beaver, Butler and Mercer Counties. Ellwood City has three teams competing in the 2023 campaign: The Moose, the Lions and the Wolves in the 16-team league. Ellwood City, Neshannock and Laurel each have three entries apiece. AND THE CHAMPION IS…Riverside downed Ellwood City 3-1 to win the 70th Ellwood City Little League Tournament Sunday night at Freidhoff Field. Dylan Meyer led Riverside to victory with a home run and two RBI’s. This victory gave Riverside their fifth title in the tournament and their first since 2012.
