PHOTOS: Wolverines Earn Senior Day Victory Over Quaker Valley, 5-1

The Ellwood City Wolverines defeated Quaker Valley 5-1 on Saturday. Prior to the contest, the Ellwood City seniors were recognized with their parents as part of the Senior Day game. After a relatively quiet first five innings, Ellwood City scored four runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. The offensive onslaught by the Wolverines was led by James Meehan (2-3, 2 runs, 1 2B, 1 RBI), Alexander Roth, Noah Magill, and RJ Murray, who each had RBIs in the pivotal inning. Falk Homers, Powers Riverside Over Rival Ellwood City

Aaron Falk powered the Riverside Panthers to a 6-2 victory over Ellwood City Friday afternoon. Falk drove in runs with a single in the first, a double in the second, and a home run in the fifth inning. The Panthers jumped out to an early when Evan Burry collected a run scoring double in the first inning. Riverside staked claim to a 3-0 lead after the first frame and never looked back. In a rather successful afternoon for the local baseball and softball teams, Ellwood City baseball and softball teams both earned victories while the Riverside baseball team defeated Aliquippa handily. Wolverines Grab Lead In Fifth Inning For Victory Over Freedom Area Ellwood City bounced back from a four run deficit and stole the lead late, defeating Freedom 8-4 on the road Tuesday. Ellwood City baseball and softball programs took to the fields this month as a start to their respective spring seasons with each having new outlooks on the long anticipated season. Ellwood City defeated Shady Side Academy 4-0 on Monday as Ryan Gibbons and Ryan Hampton combined to toss a three-hit shutout. Ellwood City fired up the offense in the first inning, when Samuel DiCaprio singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run. Ariana Garroway was an RBI machine on Monday, driving in four runs on three hits while Natalia Greco slugged a homerun to power the Wolverines past North Catholic 9-6 on Monday. Garroway drove in runs on a grand slam in the first as the Wolverines batted around and raced out to an early 9-0 lead at home. North Catholic scored five runs in the third inning, but Wolverines still managed to pull out the victory. Garroway went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Wolverines in hits. Varsity Softball Knocks Off Previously Unbeaten Avonworth Record Now 8-4 Avonworth walked into Stiefel Park with an unblemished 13-0 record and were ranked as the #1 team in WPIAL Class 3A. They left with their first loss of the season as The Lady Wolverines made a statement with a convincing 6-1 win. The Ellwood City Wolverines boys grabbed an early lead on its way to a 6-5 victory over North Catholic at home on Wednesday. The Wolverines scored three runs in the bottom of the first frame, aided by an RBI double by senior Ricky Pitrelli and a passed ball by North Catholic catcher in the frame. Pitrelli smacked two doubles (2-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 runs scored) in the contest and was one of two Wolverines to collect two hits on the day, joining fellow senior Brady Welsh (2-3, 2 runs scored) with multiple hits for the victors. Riverside used late scoring outbursts to help easily dispatched Ellwood City 8-2 on Monday afternoon at Sanders Field in Ewing Park. The visiting Panthers (11-1 overall) put up four runs in the sixth and another four runs in the final frame after the Wolverines chipped into the lead. Boehm Victorious In Pitcher’s Duel For Riverside Both teams were strong on the mound Friday, but the Riverside Panthers defeated South Side 3-1 behind the arm of Gunnar Boehm.
