Ellwood City baseball and softball programs took to the fields this month as a start to their respective spring seasons with each having new outlooks on the long anticipated season. Wolverines Keep Playoff Hopes Alive, Shutout Shady Side Academy

Ellwood City defeated Shady Side Academy 4-0 on Monday as Ryan Gibbons and Ryan Hampton combined to toss a three-hit shutout. Ellwood City fired up the offense in the first inning, when Samuel DiCaprio singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run. The Wolverines put up a four-spot in the first frame, accounting for all of the game’s offense. Both teams accounted for only seven hits – all singles. Gibbons got the win for the Wolverines. PHOTOS: Garroway, Greco Power EC Softball To Victory; Boys Baseball Holds On Late For Win

Ariana Garroway was an RBI machine on Monday, driving in four runs on three hits while Natalia Greco slugged a homerun to power the Wolverines past North Catholic 9-6 on Monday. Garroway drove in runs on a grand slam in the first as the Wolverines batted around and raced out to an early 9-0 lead at home. North Catholic scored five runs in the third inning, but Wolverines still managed to pull out the victory. Garroway went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Wolverines in hits. Varsity Softball Knocks Off Previously Unbeaten Avonworth Record Now 8-4 Avonworth walked into Stiefel Park with an unblemished 13-0 record and were ranked as the #1 team in WPIAL Class 3A. They left with their first loss of the season as The Lady Wolverines made a statement with a convincing 6-1 win. The Wolverines kept their section championship aspirations alive as they improved to 5-2 in section play. Early Lead For Wolverine Baseball Sets Stage For Victory

The Ellwood City Wolverines boys grabbed an early lead on its way to a 6-5 victory over North Catholic at home on Wednesday. The Wolverines scored three runs in the bottom of the first frame, aided by an RBI double by senior Ricky Pitrelli and a passed ball by North Catholic catcher in the frame. Pitrelli smacked two doubles (2-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 runs scored) in the contest and was one of two Wolverines to collect two hits on the day, joining fellow senior Brady Welsh (2-3, 2 runs scored) with multiple hits for the victors. Riverside used late scoring outbursts to help easily dispatched Ellwood City 8-2 on Monday afternoon at Sanders Field in Ewing Park. The visiting Panthers (11-1 overall) put up four runs in the sixth and another four runs in the final frame after the Wolverines chipped into the lead. Riverside’s offense in the seventh came from singles by Drew Speicher, Ethan Ziegler, and Ben Hughes and a sac fly by Ty Thellman. Gunnar Boehm was the winning pitcher for Riverside. Boehm Victorious In Pitcher’s Duel For Riverside Both teams were strong on the mound Friday, but the Riverside Panthers defeated South Side 3-1 behind the arm of Gunnar Boehm. Gunnar Boehm’s five-RBI outburst sealed the deal in Riverside’s 11-1 mercy rule victory over Ellwood City on Friday afternoon at Dan Oliastro Field. Bats Blistered as Riverside Panthers Defeats Beaver Falls, 14-9 Both pitching staffs had their hands full on Tuesday in a high-scoring affair where the Riverside Lady Panthers bested Beaver Falls, 14-9. The Panthers (1-1 overall) opened up scoring with a six-run first inning and crept out to a 9-2 lead before the Tigers were able to respond. Beaver Falls scored four runs in the third inning.
