Gino Biondi led Ellwood City to a 5-4 win over Shaler in the nightcap of the 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament on Tuesday night. The victory will advance Ellwood City to next play Laurel on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. On Tuesday, Biondi slashed an RBI-double in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 4-4 tie to give Ellwood City the winning margin. 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Classic Begins Monday

The 71st Ellwood City Little League Tournament Classic will begin on Monday, July 25 at Freidhoff Field in the Ewing Park Baseball Complex. The tournament, which began in 1952, is the second oldest Little League tournament in the nation next to the Little League World Series which celebrates its’ 75th tournament this season. Eight teams will compete for the title in the double-elimination tournament. The tournament field is as follows: Ellwood City, West View/Ross, New Castle, Shaler, Laurel, Neshannock, Central Valley and Shenango. Ominous skies surrounding Sanders Field Tuesday afternoon when the Ellwood City Wolverines were set to host Mohawk for the second game of their home-and-home series with the Warriors. The afternoon started with senior recognition for the five Wolverines seniors prior to first pitch, but the game was not able to be completed. Ellwood City baseball and softball teams each earned WPIAL playoffs berths last year and each program will look to continue to build on last year’s success in their respective 2022 campaigns. The Ellwood City High School baseball team wrapped up an impressive fall campaign, making a run in the single elimination playoff tournament before ultimately falling to defending WPIAL Champion Hopewell last weekend. The Wolverines finished 8-4-1 earning a 3-seed in the playoff picture. Ellwood City defeated Beaver Falls and Riverside before falling 6-0 to the Vikings in the championship game. 70th Ellwood City Little League Tournament To Begin Tonight

BATTER UP! The 70th Ellwood City Little League Tournament will begin on Tuesday night at Freidhoff Field. The tournament, which began in 1952, is the second oldest Little League tournament in the country next to the Little League World Series which is in its’ 74th season. Ellwood City will meet Neshannock at 6:00 PM and Riverside will meet Shenango at 8:00 PM.
