PHOTOS: Lady Wolverines Claim Rivalry Victory Over Panthers

The Lady Wolverines claimed a 42-31 rivalry victory over Riverside on their home court Monday night. Balanced scoring a third quarter spurt helped the Wolverines pull away in the tightly contested game. Ellwood City held Riverside to a single field goal in a 3rd quarter that stretched what was a five-point halftime lead out to an 11-point cushion. Lady Wolverines Defend Home Court, Beat Beaver Falls

The Ellwood City Lady Wolverines defended home court Monday night in a backyard battle with neighboring Beaver Falls, defeating the Tigers 53-48. Ellwood City used points from distance in pivotal third quarter and later at the free throw line to secure the section win. Three out of six player were in double figures including senior Isabella Roth with a team-high 15 points (four 3-pointers; 3-8 from the line). Wolverine Basketball Teams Each Collect Tournament Championships

Both Ellwood City Wolverine boys and girls basketball teams collected holiday tournament championships over the weekend. The boys basketball team took the Mercer Christmas Tournament championship Friday while the girls basketball team upset the host Spartans to collect a Laurel Christmas Tournament championship on Saturday. Wolverines Win versus Fort LeBoeuf Ellwood City was victorious against Fort LeBoeuf 63-48 on Friday with the help of Rick Pitrelli, who scored 20 points. Wolverine Boys Fall To Hopewell, EC & RHS Girls Victorious

Wolverine Boys Lose To Hopewell Ellwood City fell to Hopewell on Monday, 72-67, even with freshman Steve Antuono scoring 20 points. Jake McGovern scored a game-high 21 points, on seven 3-pointers, to help Hopewell secure the victory. Ellwood City and Hopewell were tied up at 36-36 at the half, but Hopewell gained the momentum during the third quarter, stretching out to a seven-point lead. For some, the buzz of Friday Night’s boys basketball game may have worn off by the end of the weekend, but if anyone needed another reason to get excited for high school basketball action, the buzz resurfaced Monday Night during the Panthers and Wolverines girls basketball game in Ellwood City. Video: Ketterer Ends Varsity Career with 1005 Points

Karrington Ketterer broke the 1000 point mark in her final game of varsity basketball on Monday against Montour. Ketterer has played at the varsity level since her freshmen year. She scored 156 points in 9th grade, 265 in 10th, 284 in 11th and 300 this year. The Ellwood City Lady Wolverines lost Monday’s away game 57-42. They end the season 9-13 overall and 6-8 in their conference. Although the team was hoping for a playoff run, they finished fifth in their Class AAA conference. Senior Karrington Ketterer scored 26 points in yesterday’s 49-34 win against New Castle on Senior Night. The Lady Wolverines have five seniors on the roster and all hold a special place to head coach Jolene Krupa and her sister, assistant coach Dena Noble. When the two started coaching, the Class of 2016 was in eighth grade, and Krupa and Noble have coached them up through the years. Ellwood Girls Basketball Thrashes Lincoln Park

Karrington Ketterer scored the game high of 14 points in yesterday’s away win against Lincoln Park. The Ellwood City girls basketball team maintained a steady lead through the first three quarters. Although Lincoln Park’s offense struck back in the final quarter, scoring 12-6, they didn’t overcome Ellwood’s lead, ending the game 42-32. In addition to Ketterer, Allie McKelvey and Emily Brown each scored seven points. Other scorers for Ellwood were Breonna Streit, six; Natalie Greco, four; Cortni Prine, three; and Isabella Roth, one.

Weekly Basketball Recap: Ellwood City Girls Defeat Hopewell in Conference Game

The Ellwood City girls basketball team played two conference games this week, losing a close away game to Beaver 42-35 on Monday, Jan. 25 and defeating Hopewell 51-30 at a home game yesterday. In Monday’s game, the Lady Wolverines trailed Beaver 38-24 by the third quarter. However, a fierce counterattack in the final quarter gave Ellwood 11-4, closing the gap but not enough to even the score. For Ellwood, Breonna Streit and Karrington Ketterer led the offense with 11 points each. Nine of Streit’s points came from three-point shots.
