The Ellwood City girls basketball team has earned a playoff berth in the 2019 WPIAL Class 3-A Playoffs that begin next week. The Wolverines, winners of four consecutive games, will square off against the 4-seed Carlynton Cougars next Wednesday at 6:30pm at North Hills High School. The inside-outside duo of seniors Natalia Greco and Isabella Roth combined for 29 points to lead the Lady Wolverines to 51-39 senior night victory over Mohawk Monday night. Roth collected four 3-pointers en route to her team high of 17 points while Greco battled inside earning 16 free throw attempts (10 made FT) on her way to 12 points.  The duo scored eight of the team’s 12 points in the final frame help close out the victory which marked a third consecutive victory for Ellwood City. The Lady Wolverines claimed a 42-31 rivalry victory over Riverside on their home court Monday night. Balanced scoring a third quarter spurt helped the Wolverines pull away in the tightly contested game. Ellwood City held Riverside to a single field goal in a 3rd quarter that stretched what was a five-point halftime lead out to an 11-point cushion. Lady Wolverines Defend Home Court, Beat Beaver Falls

The Ellwood City Lady Wolverines defended home court Monday night in a backyard battle with neighboring Beaver Falls, defeating the Tigers 53-48.  Ellwood City used points from distance in pivotal third quarter and later at the free throw line to secure the section win. Wolverine Basketball Teams Each Collect Tournament Championships

Both Ellwood City Wolverine boys and girls basketball teams collected holiday tournament championships over the weekend.  The boys basketball team took the Mercer Christmas Tournament championship Friday while the girls basketball team upset the host Spartans to collect a Laurel Christmas Tournament championship on Saturday. Wolverine Boys Lose To Hopewell Ellwood City fell to Hopewell on Monday, 72-67, even with freshman Steve Antuono scoring 20 points. Jake McGovern scored a game-high 21 points, on seven 3-pointers, to help Hopewell secure the victory. Karrington Ketterer broke the 1000 point mark in her final game of varsity basketball on Monday against Montour. Ketterer has played at the varsity level since her freshmen year. She scored 156 points in 9th grade, 265 in 10th, 284 in 11th and 300 this year. The Ellwood City Lady Wolverines lost Monday’s away game 57-42. Senior Karrington Ketterer scored 26 points in yesterday’s 49-34 win against New Castle on Senior Night. The Lady Wolverines have five seniors on the roster and all hold a special place to head coach Jolene Krupa and her sister, assistant coach Dena Noble.
