For the first time in 25 years, both the Ellwood City boys and girls basketball teams have qualified for their respective WPIAL Playoffs in the same season. The Ellwood City girls basketball team used a decisive third quarter to race away from rival Riverside Monday evening and pick-up a 60-31 RivEll Cup victory that secured a Class 3A playoff berth. Just days after the boys basketball team defeated Neshannock, the Ellwood City girls basketball team went on the road and upset the section-leading Lady Lancers 67-60 Thursday night. Five Wolverines scored in double figures in the sound victory as Ellwood City led throughout the contest in handing the Lancers (11-5 Overall, 5-1 Section 3A-1) their first section loss. The Ellwood City boys and girls basketball team each netted a Christmas Tournament championship Thursday evening. First, the Wolverines boys team easily dismantled Maplewood 62-22 to capture the Mercer Christmas Tournament championship. Nine players, including all five starters, scored in the victory. Colten Crizer scored a game-high 13 points while Ryan Widmaier scored a career-high 12 points off the bench. A pair of big men led the offensive charge Wednesday night for the Ellwood City boys basketball team as they picked up a victory over Redbank Valley in the Mercer Christmas Tournament. Aaron Lake – who finished with a career high 22 points – and Joseph Roth combined to score 53 points in the Wolverines 77-71 victory. The Ellwood City Girls Basketball Team routed New Brighton 69-15 Monday night, improving their record to 5-1 on the young season. Claire Noble, a senior standout athlete at Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday to continue her academic and athletic career at Clarion University. Let’s Bounce. The Ellwood City Girls Basketball team, including Head Coach Dena Noble, along with her staff and players, will be hosting a basketball clinic for girls in Grades 3-6. The clinic is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 4th and Saturday, November 11th. Both days are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Lincoln High School large gymnasium.
