PHOTOS: Four RBI Day for Mittler Leads Wolverines Rout Over Riverside

Four runs batted in from Reagan Mittler helped lead Wolverines past Riverside in a 20-5 rout on Saturday. Mittler drove in runs on a single in the first and a double in the second. The Wolverines (3-2 overall) fired up the offense in the first inning, when Anna Ferrucci singled scoring the game’s first run.  Ellwood City scored in every inning thereafter including a 9-run outburst in the second frame. PHOTOS: Boehm’s Grand Slam Blasts Seals The Deal For Riverside

Gunnar Boehm’s five-RBI outburst sealed the deal in Riverside’s 11-1 mercy rule victory over Ellwood City on Friday afternoon at Dan Oliastro Field. Boehm showed timely hitting on Friday, driving in five runs on only two hits including the grand slam in the pivotal, 7-run 4th inning to lead Riverside. Boehm also doubled in a run in the sixth. Six members of the Pittsburgh Steelers basketball squad took the court Wednesday night at 8pm against the Lincoln Caring Team.  Steeler players included notable former players Charlie Batch and Louis Lipps along with 2017 3rd round pick Cam Sutton who put on a show for the capacity crowd. The Caring Team Stars roster includes faculty members Nick Franitti, Dena Noble, Craig Mills, Matt Gerello, Jolene Krupa, Gary Rozanski, Ashley Coulter, Ryan Wilfong, and Bruce Prisuta along with boys varsity players Anthony Roth, Andrew O’Brien, Nico Lucarelli and Broc Boariu. PHOTOS: Ellwood City Annual Easter Egg Hunt

This past weekend marked the 23rd Annual Community Easter Egg hunt which took place in Ewing Park for ALL area children ages 10 and under. This year the committee added one extra hunt to the event, a special hunt for Special needs and handicapped children.  In total, over 8,000 eggs were distributed through the various hunts along with 25 golden eggs that were redeemed for special prizes. PHOTOS: Local School Districts Collaborate to Advance STEAM Programs

Earlier this month, on March 7th, Hartman Intermediate School’s Arts and Bots Club, part of the Ellwood City Area School District, traveled to Mohawk Elementary to showcase their robotic Dr. Seuss characters and to assist in starting an Arts and Bots Club at Mohawk School District. The Hartman Arts and Bots Club, consisting of twenty 5th and 6th grade students, is under the direction of Alan Marsh, Elementary Art teacher, Scott Setzenfand, STEAM Facilitator, and Matt Skoczylas, Elementary Technology teacher. The 10th Annual Club Hope Talent Show and 10 Year Anniversary Celebration held last on Saturday, February 24th turned out to be an overwhelming success! The seats were full in the LHS auditorium on as 27 student and teacher acts took the stage. Club Hope was so honored to also be joined by the Taylor Family who sang a song in memory of their uncle, B.E Taylor, who lost his battle with cancer last year. PHOTOS: Winter Wine and Brew Fest

For the second year and with a lot of great food, drinks and entertainment, the Ellwood City Winter Wine and Brew Fest was enjoyed by many this weekend. The proceeds will benefit the Ellwood City Revitalization in their quest to raise $90,000 to create 18-foot high triangular arches upon which lights will hang to provide a longer season for acts performing at the five-year-old, $2.2 million Ellwood City Community Plaza. PHOTOS: Wolverines Stave Off Furious Comeback, Defeat Panthers In Rivalry Rematch

Broc Boariu scored 17 points to lead Ellwood City to a 63-54 victory over Riverside on Friday. Ellwood City Wolverines grabbed a second quarter lead that ballooned to as many as 21 points in the third quarter, but had to withstand a furious Riverside comeback to hold on to its victory. The victory for the Wolverine boys club completed a season sweep in the ‘RivEll’ game and also clinched a playoff spot for the second consecutive year. This weeks Old Photo Friday, provided by the Ellwood City Historical Society, is a photo from 1967’s Diamond Jubilee. The news column from 1967 reads: This 1931 Studebaker, owned by B.J. McCandless, added a touch of history to Saturday’s motor caravan which traveled to the Beaver Valley to publicize Ellwood City’s Diamond Jubilee celebration scheduled for Aug. 6-12. Among the local persons who joined in the caravan wearing approprate clothing are, from the left, Mrs. Harold Tritt, Tom Downing who drove the car, Mrs. Arthur Watterson, Mrs. Ed Rouse and Harry McCloskey.
