Nine Local Athletes Competing In PIAA Track & Field Championships

The relay team of Nick Wise, Bradley Custer, Drew Steffler, and Colten Crizer will be four of the six Ellwood City athletes competing in the PIAA Track & Field Championships this Friday and Saturday at the Seth Grove Stadium at Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, PA. The 4×800 Meter relay team will be joined by WPIAL 300m hurdle champion Nick Franitti and female high jumper Delaney Sturgeon. Hare Leads Panthers Past South Allegheny, Advancing to WPIAL Championship

The Panthers are one step closer to repeating, thanks in large part to Zach Hare. The 6’3″ junior struck out 11 batters across six scoreless innings to lead Riverside past South Allegheny 2-0 on Tuesday in the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals.  The top-seeded Panthers (16-1 Overall) advance to the WPIAL Class 3A Championship game against #7 seed Avonworth who defeated #14 Burrell 2-1 in 8 innings on Tuesday at North Allegheny. Bottom Of Lineup Carries Riverside Past South Park In WPIAL Quarterfinals

The bottom of the lineup helped Riverside cruise to a 11-1 mercy rule victory over South Park in the WPIAL Class 3A Quarterfinals on Monday at Neshannock High School. Sam Barber, Sean Hayes, and Christian Lucarelli combined for six of the Panthers’ 10 hits in the victory. The trio combined for three RBIs and two runs scored. Lucarelli also earned the victory on the mound for Riverside, going the full five innings, allowing one earned run and striking out seven batters.  He walked four and allowed only two hits. Franitti, Sullivan Earn Top Finishes At WPIAL Track & Field Championships

Top place finishes by two local athletes spotlighted the individual achievements at the 2024 WPIAL Boys’ & Girls’ Track & Field Championships on Wednesday at the William C. Lennox Track on the campus of Slippery Rock University. Ellwood City sprinter Nick Franitti took home a 1st place WPIAL Championship in the WPIAL Class 2A Boys 300m Hurdles. Franitti posted a mark of 39.39 to take home gold. Three Victories In WPIAL Opening Round Action

All three local teams competing Tuesday in the opening round of their respective WPIAL playoffs earned victories. RIVERSIDE 4 KEYSTONE OAKS 1 Hunter Garvin and Zack Hare combined for a no-hitter as top seeded Riverside earned a 4-1 victory over Keystone Oaks on Tuesday. Hare struck out nine batters on the afternoon but Keystone Oaks scored the games first run in the fourth inning without the aid of a hit. Three local teams will compete on Tuesday in the opening round of their respective WPIAL playoffs Top seeded Panthers boys baseball team will look to defend its WPIAL title as it opens its 2024 playoff journey on Tuesday. Riverside will take on #16 Keystone Oaks at 4:30 p.m. at North Allegheny High School. The Ellwood City boys track and field team placed third in the WPIAL Class 2A team championship at Peters Township Middle School on Tuesday. The Wolverines defeated Hopewell 79-61 to earn the third place finish. “I think many teams underestimated us this year and we proved everyone wrong,” said head coach Nate Brown. “We started with several postponed meets and my belief is the calendar beat us up pretty badly. The Riverside baseball team completed its critical two-game sweep of Mohawk on Tuesday, earning a 9-4 road victory and clinching the Section 1-3A title. The Panthers (13-1 Overall, 11-1 Section 1-3A) used a three-run homerun by Darren McDade in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. In two pivotal playoff implicating match-ups on Monday, both local teams came out with big victories, putting more focus on Tuesday’s Class 3A-1 section games. Needing two victories over the Wildcats this week to earn a playoff berth, Ellwood City outlasted Shenango 6-3 in 13 innings Monday to earn the first victory in the two-game series.
