After a series of weather induced rescheduled affairs, the Riverside Panthers and Ellwood City Wolverines found themselves at Jack Critchfield Park on the grounds of Slippery Rock University Friday evening for a WPIAL section tilt. Aaron Lake struck out 10 batters in a complete game gem to lead the Ellwood City Wolverines past Riverside 4-0 on Tuesday at Beaver Falls High School. Lake surrendered just three hits and three walks in his performance that handed the Panthers their first loss of the season. Zack Hare was dominant on the bump Thursday afternoon and at the plate Thursday in Riverside’s 4-1 victory over West Allegheny running the Panthers early season unbeaten record to 4-0. The Ellwood City Wolverines baseball team was victorious against West Allegheny 8-3 on Friday at Sanders Field to extend their early season unbeaten mark to 3-0. The Wolverines opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with three runs thanks in part to two doubles, including a two-run double by Will Nardone. The Ellwood City Wolverines softball team used a four run sixth inning to defeat Riverside 9-5 on Friday afternoon. Ellwood City boys and girls basketball teams each qualified for the PIAA State Championships, but each will face a district champion in the PIAA 3A opening round this weekend. The Riverside Panthers boys swim team placed 15th Overall in the WPIAL Class 2A Swimming & Diving Championships that took place Thursday and Friday at Treas Pool on campus at the University of Pittsburgh. The Panthers relay team shined with a top-10 finish in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay. The team qualified both the 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay for the PIAA state championships. The victory advances the Wolverines (15-10 Overall) to the WPIAL Class 3A Fifth-Place game against Shady Side Academy on Wednesday.
