Ellwood City Little League To Celebrate 75th Anniversary Season This Summer

Ellwood City Little League Baseball will celebrate their 75th anniversary this season. Ellwood City organized the first Little League program in Lawrence, Beaver, Butler and Mercer counties in 1950. Ellwood City along with McKeesport, Washington, Coraopolis, and Tarentum were the five leagues in western Pennsylvania that participated in the state tournament in 1950. The inaugural game of the Ellwood City Little League game was played at the Lincoln High School Field on June 6, 1950. Covert Medalist For First Time At BC3 As Pioneer Golfers Win By 3-stroke Margin

Butler County Community College golfer Mitchell Covert on Tuesday won medalist honor for the first time as a Pioneer as BC3 edged Hocking Community College, Nelsonville, Ohio, by three strokes and topped three other squads at Lake Arthur Golf Club to move to 5-0 this spring. Covert cut six strokes off his spring-season opening score April 17 at Lake Arthur Golf Club to finish Tuesday with a 5-over 77 in BC3’s 331-334 victory over Hocking Community College. Sturgeon Sets School Record At MAC Championships, Earns MVP

Delaney Sturgeon earned top ten finishes in four events at the 2025 MAC Championships held at Shenango High School on Wednesday afternoon. Her top mark in the Girls High Jump (5-07.00) set a new school record breaking a near four decade mark of 5’6″ set back in 1986 by Debby Plavecsky. Sturgeon also earned a 3rd place finish in Girls 100m Hurdles (15.87), 6th place finish in the Girls Triple Jump (34-08.00) and 8th place finish in the Girls Long Jump (16-03.00). EC, RHS Baseball Teams Each Collect 10th Victories Of Season

The Ellwood City and Riverside baseball teams each collected their 10th victories of the regular season on Tuesday. The Wolverines easily dispatched visiting Beaver Falls 15-0 in four innings at Sanders Field in Ewing Park while the Panthers knocked off Quaker Valley 4-1 at home.  Both teams will next play road games to round out their respective two-games series. Covert Fires 83, BC3 Golfers Win Spring Season Opener

Lincoln High School graduate Mitchell Covert fired a round of 83, finishing fourth, to help lead Butler County Community College victory over Jamestown (N.Y.) Community College at Lake Arthur Golf Club in BC3’s spring-season opener last Thursday. BC3 golfer Xander Downing won medalist honor for the fifth time as a Pioneer as BC3 Downing shot a 7-over 79 as BC3 golfers swept the top four places in a 323-394 victory on their home course. Riverside Falls To Bethel Park 2-1 On Walk-Off Single

A walk-off single left the Riverside Panthers on the wrong end of a 2-1 extra inning defeat to Bethel Park Thursday afternoon. The game was tied at one in the bottom of the eleventh when Stanhoff singled, scoring one run. The pitching performance was outstanding for Riverside as three Panther pitchers struck out 22 batters. Amber McQuistion was dominant in the circle as the hurler rang up 12 strikeouts in Ellwood City’s 6-0 victory over Hopewell on Thursday. McQuistion gave up three hits and zero runs over seven innings while walking two. Ellwood City student-athletes Kaden Docchio (Football, Track & Field, Wrestling) and Caitlin Kreitzer (Basketball, Football, Soccer, Softball, Track & Field, Volleyball) are among the 158 candidates from 92 schools nominated for the 2025 WPIAL James Collins Scholar-Athlete Award. Twenty winners (10 male, 10 female) are set to be announced on Wednesday, April 16 WPIAL member schools are permitted to nominate one male and one female student-athlete for the James Collins Scholar-Athlete Award. Ellwood City Softball/Tennis Sweeps Beaver Falls; Baseball Beats QV

In a clean sweep on Monday, the Ellwood City softball and tennis teams each collected victories over the Beaver Falls Tigers while the Wolverines baseball squad knocked off Quaker Valley. The Lady Wolverines softball team easily dispatched the visiting Tigers 12-1 at Stiefel Park in five innings. Hare Strikes Out 14, Panthers Shut Out Warriors; Wolverines Sweep Sto-Rox

Zach Hare struck out 14 batters Friday afternoon over six shut out innings as Riverside defeated Mohawk 8-0 at Jack Critchfield Park at Slippery Rock University. Hare limited the Warriors to only two hits and two walks in his stellar pitching performance. Hare also posted two RBIs offensively to lead the Panthers attack.
