Ellwood City Wrestling Eyes Continued Growth, Playoffs

The Ellwood City Wrestling team under the direction of coach John Fleming is eyeing a playoff berth this season. Along with continued growth within the program, Fleming points out the Wolverines team will grow in numbers as well and have its biggest squad under his watch with a handful of football players joining the team for the 2023-24 campaign. Fluharty Takes 3rd Overall At PIAA Championships, Ellwood City Boys Place 7th Overall

Riverside Panther senior Lexi Fluharty posted a 3rd overall finish in the PIAA Class-A Cross Country individual championships at Parkview XC Course in Hershey, PA on Saturday. Fluharty, who won the WPIAL Championship last month, finished with an overall time of 19:28 on Saturday. Her time and finish was the best finish by a WPIAL District 7 participant. Ellwood City has qualified for the WPIAL playoffs for the first time since 2011. The #14 seeded Wolverines will travel to face the #3 seeded Washington Prexies on Friday at 7:00 PM at Washington High School Stadium. Kick off is 7:00 p.m. for the opening round contest. Ellwood City used a strong running game powered by Elijah Palmer-McCane to rout Riverside 41-0 Friday Night at Riverside Memorial Stadium. The ‘RivEll Cup’ victory also clinched the Wolverines first playoff berth since 2011. Palmer-McCane scored four first half rushing touchdowns as the visiting Wolverines jumped out to a 35-0 halftime advantage. In the first quarter, Palmer-McCane scored from 1-yard out and later in the quarter from 41-yards out. Lexi Fluharty finished 1st Overall in the WPIAL Class-A Cross Country Championships at White Oak Park in McKeesport on Thursday. The Riverside senior finished with a time of 18:54.50.  Fellow Panther runners Brooke Wissinger (20:48.10) and Isabella D’Allessandro (30:39.90) helped pace the Riverside team effort in the girls Class-A Championships. The section-leading Neshannock Lancers earned a soggy 42-14 victory Friday night over the host Wolverines as part of Ellwood City Senior Night. The Riverside girls soccer team has qualified for the 2023 WPIAL Playoffs and will set their eyes on opening round opponent – Charleroi – in the Class-A bracket.
