Ellwood City Borough Council Meet the Candidate Night Recap

Less than half of the running candidates attended yesterday evening’s Meet the Candidate Night, hosted by the Ellwood City Kitchen Cabinet. Four candidates, three of which are current members of council running for reelection, attended the public event. Democratic incumbent, Michele Lamenza, and newcomer, Caleb Cragle attended – their challengers, former councilman James Barry, and newcomers Bryan Vincent and John Pansera were not present. Republic incumbents, David DeCaria and Connie MacDonald were present while their republican challengers Rob Brough, John Cress, Brandon Fisher and Lisa Guerrera were absent. CCBC Honors Graduates, Welcomes Back Founding Faculty Leader, and Debuts Long-Lost Alma Mater

Monaca, PA – Community College of Beaver County (CCBC) held its annual Commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 4 to recognize the Class of 2017 and conclude a year-long celebration of the College’s 50th anniversary. 435 students, who completed their studies in August 2016, December 2016, and May 2017, were awarded an associate degree, certificate, or diploma from the School of Aviation Sciences; School of Nursing and Allied Health; and School of Business, Arts, Sciences, and Technology. Birds chirping and warmer weather means one thing – it is golf season! Ellwood City Area Chamber of Commerce 29th Annual Golf Open is on Monday, June 26, 2017 at Olde Stonewall Golf Club. Olde Stonewall is considered Western Pennsylvania’s Premier Golf Destination. TELL ME A TALE: Prison Based Family Literacy Initiative

Family literacy programs can provide opportunities for education success for parents and children.  These programs can serve as models of family involvement, showing how families can become part of an extended classroom and build on the work of the school.  Engagement in family programs does not have to stop because a parent is incarcerated. Yard waste pick up for Ellwood City is scheduled for the week of May 15. The following information is gathered from Ellwood City Borough’s official website: YARD WASTE PICK UP: Green borough yard waste bins are also available for residents to dispose of their simple yard waste. Yard waste bins are available for purchase for $53.00 and can be purchased at the borough utility office or by calling 724-758-5576. Yard waste bins are collected on specified weeks throughout the calendar years. Dates are also provided on borough utility bills. Class of ’54 April Meeting

Pudue LaCava hosted the Lincoln Class of 1954 “Nite at the Movies” committee meeting at her Mt. Vernon Drive home on Wednesday April 19. The session began with a luncheon provided by the committee, featuring pizza by “Pinky” Maielli and dessert by Ilene Gardner and served by LaCava and Gardner. Co-Chairman, James Gillespie conducted the business session that followed. Clemmy Sirimarco presented the financial reports. Gillespie reported on the fund raising and distributed the April tickets. Former Treasurer Prohibited from Attending Ellwood City Arts and Crafts Festival

Suzanne Darlen Bleakney, 50, of Ellwood City, the previous Ellwood City Arts, Crafts, Food, and Entertainment Festival treasurer accused of theft, has now pleaded guilty Friday to one count of theft. Bleakney was facing charges of theft by unlawful taking and theft by failure to make required disposition of funds received after supposedly stealing upwards of $1650.00 from the festival bank account during her time working as the treasurer. Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge J. Craig Cox sentenced her to 18 months of probation and 20 hours of community service. She is also ordered to repay the $1,650 of misappropriated…

PHOTOS: Ellwood City Amateur Baseball Federation Opening Day

The Ellwood City Amateur Baseball Federation hosted their annual opening day ceremony Saturday at Friedhoff Field – an event which the organizations Vice President, Michael Widmaier, said was a success. “The weather held off until the end, parents and grandparents paraded with their kids, the high school baseball players applauded the young players as they paraded onto the field, Mayor Court attended, and Nathan Scott threw the first pitch. Overall the day was successful.” The event had carnival style games including a dunk tank, raffle, parade, Chinese auction, home run derby, and the national anthem sung by a local student….
