February Mayor’s Advisory Meeting

On February 23, the Mayor’s Advisory Committee met in council Chambers; parking problems were discussed, especially vehicles parking on corners posing difficulties to drivers. Also discussed were the All Terrain Vehicles on city streets. Mayor Court reported that Jozek is in poor health and commented that, “there will never be another K9 quite like Jozek”. The fight against drugs continues and there have been 375 arrests since Mayor Court took office. It was reported that 3 new businesses have recently opened in the borough: John DeCaro Law Firm, Consignment Shop and Smoking Dave’s Barbecue. Complaints were received about free-running dogs…

Holy Redeemer Catholic School to Close: “Schools Are Now a Business”

Heavy emotions filled Holy Redeemer Catholic School’s lunchroom yesterday during the public meeting about the school’s unexpected closure. Sister JoAnne, the principal of Holy Redeemer Catholic School stated during the meeting that she believes schools are no longer what they once were – they are now businesses that rely on attending students to fund raise and due to the few students attending the school, funding is the main contributing factor to the schools termination. “Schools are now a business, no matter where your child will attend – be it public or private, fundraising will be a thing, and without children…

Honoring Hack Wilson

Join the Ellwood City Area Historical Society and the Ellwood City Community in honoring Hack Wilson – a baseball legend born in Ellwood City in 1900, who rivaled the mighty Babe Ruth. His 1930 statistics included the “unbreakable” record of 191 runs batted in a National League leading 56 home runs (a record that stood for 68 years), .356 batting average, and a league-leading .723 slugging percentage. March/April Activities at the Carnegie Free Library of Beaver Falls

Saturday, March 4th, it’s Science With Seuss 11am-12:30pm.  Pre K to 2nd graders are invited to Celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, explore, create and have fun.  The Franklin Center will be on hand with a STEM Station, HeadStart and Pre-K Counts will have a literacy games and skills station, create a Seuss Make and Take and enjoy the Scavenger Hunt, designed to use a series of clues to lead parent and child from one location to the next.  The program will include a fun snack.  Registration required.  Call the library to register at 724.846.4340. Criminal Complaint: Wampum Storage Unit Theft

According to the criminal complaint on Jan. 22 a Pennsylvania State Trooper was dispatched to the Mini Storage Units located at 941 Clyde Street in Wampum Borough, in reference to four units being broken into. Upon arrival the officer determined the locks were cut on all four units; surveillance photos of the suspect and the car he was driving was provided, allowing further investigation to reveal the suspect as Corey D. Rayl, 43, of Beaver Falls, PA. The estimated amount of stolen goods equals $1809.00 and Rayl will be facing felony charges of criminal trespass and entering unattended property, misdemeanor…

Panthers Fall to North Catholic in Quarterfinals

A complete defensive gem was seen at Sewickley Academy as Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic’s suffocating zone defense caused fits for Riverside all night long. It was was a theme across the Class-3A quarterfinals as three of the four games combined to score no more than the 87 points in North Catholic’s 55-32 victory.
