80 Years Ago Today: Ellwood Woman Wins Dollar for Prize Recipe

According to the Twitter user Jon Shifflet, who provides a photo of a printed recipe (photo below), today marks the 80th anniversary that Lillian Hoy of Division Street in Ellwood City submitted a recipe to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for “Calcuttas” and won a $1 prize! The recipe calls for an odd mixture of prunes, rice, chutney, gherkins, bacon and Worcestershire sauce. Back-to-back: Lady Wolverines Dominant in WPIAL Repeat

Elwood City’s softball team has been a dominant force over WPIAL opponents in recent years, as it carried a carried a 37-game winning streak against such foes into Wednesday’s Class 3A championship game. That dominance continued as the Wolverines scored a convincing 10-0 victory in five innings against Deer Lakes at California University’s Lilley Field. Ellwood City Woman Most Senior of BC3’s Largest Class Since 2000

(Butler, PA) An Ellwood City grandmother of three was the most senior of the 596 graduates in Butler County Community College’s Class of 2017. Kathie Potemra, 63, of Park Avenue, earned an associate of applied science degree in office administration-medical from BC3. She attended BC3 at Lawrence Crossing in New Castle, BC3’s main campus and took courses online. Potemra, BC3’s most senior graduate by 327 days, says “you can never get enough education.” The 1972 graduate of Shenango High School also earned an associate degree in information management from Youngstown State University in 1997. Back-to-back: Riverside defends WPIAL throne, collects 3A Championship

Last year, it took nine innings and only one run to give the Riverside Panthers the Class AA crown with a 1-0 win over Neshannock. In 2017, it was a new class and opponent but the end result was still the same as the Panthers cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Mount Pleasant Vikings at Wild Things Park to take the 3A baseball trophy back to North Sewickley Township. Faith Fellowship Baptist Church Seeks Youth for Vacation Bible School

Faith Fellowship Baptist Church, located right besides Domino’s Pizza in Ellport, is currently seeking students for their vacation bible school (VBS) during June 12-14. There is no cost for the VBS and a light snack will be provided Monday and Tuesday, and on Wednesday there will be a pizza party. Bible study is centered around learning about Jesus Christ while having fun participating in games, making crafts,  and being with other children/teens. PHOTO: Mayor Presents Beautification Award

For the past six years, Mayor Court has presented to area residents a special “Beautification Award” sign along with a local restaurant gift certificate. This year the first Award went to Mr. and Mrs. Anthony and Loraine Buzzelli of Meadowridge Drive. The Buzzelli’s were nominated by an undisclosed resident who felt that the Buzzelli’s had spend considerable time and effort into making their home surroundings extra special. Notice of Tax Office Hours

As of June the tax office located inside the municipal builiding will be open only one day a week, Wednesday, from 10a.m.-3p.m. In July, after school taxes come out, the office will be open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10a.m.-3p.m.

The Ellwood City Memorial Day Parade was held Monday morning, honoring the men and women that died in military service for the United States of America. The parade started at 10 a.m. on the Veterans Memorial Bridge and concluded at the memorial park on Spring Avenue near Circle Playground with a free community picnic.
