Under Construction: Mount Airy Falters, Malls Now Make Way For Mini-Casinos In PA

Mini-casinos seemed so promising back in October 2017 when gaming expansion legislation authorized licenses for 10 satellite casinos. Just think: The creation of 10 smaller casinos scattered throughout the state would mean millions in new license auction fees for Pennsylvania, additional gambling revenue streams and more casino jobs. Implicit in the mini-casino legislation, there would then be a total of 23 brick-and-mortar gambling facilities. That would have been 13 regular casinos or racinos plus the 10 new mini-casinos. Evans City Man Pleads Guilty to Robbing NexTier Bank in Zelienople

PITTSBURGH, PA- A former resident of Evans City, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty in federal court to a bank robbery charge, United States Attorney Scott W. Brady announced today. Chad Vaughan, 33, pleaded guilty to one count before United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon. In connection with the guilty plea, the Court was informed that Vaughan robbed the NexTier Bank, located at 226 South Main Street, in Zelienople, on October 23, 2018, of $2,065.00. A Sanctuaries of Safety Seminar will take place this Sunday and will be hosted by the First United Methodist Church Ellwood City. The seminar is being presented to raise awareness of safety concerns in the local churches and communities. VIDEO: One Killed In Perry Township Accident

According to multiple reports, a Mercer County man was killed Wednesday morning when a school van he was driving collided with a tractor-trailer on state Route 488 in Ellwood City. Peter Ellis, 64, was killed in the accident, said Lawrence County Coroner Rich “R.J.” Johnson. According to reports, Johnson said the accident occurred around 8:50 a.m. when the van, negotiating a curve in the road, crossed the center line and hit the tractor-trailer. Senator Vogel Responds to Governor’s Budget Proposal

The Senate will carefully study the $36.1 billion state General Fund budget for Fiscal Year 2020-21 unveiled by Governor Tom Wolf on Tuesday (February 4) before a joint session of the General Assembly, according to Senator Elder Vogel (R-47). “Obviously, it’s more of the same old, same old,” said Senator Vogel. “We hear that he doesn’t want to raise taxes, yet there is over $1 billion in new spending in the budget and that money has to come from somewhere. FBI Raids Americore Hospital in Ellwood City

According to a LeeDaily.com article and many local news reports, nearly two dozen FBI agents recently raided Ellwood City Medical Center, the now-closed Pennsylvania hospital owned by Americore Health. Ellwood City Mayor Anthony Court told WPXI that the agents “carried out boxes and boxes of material from the medical center” late last week. The FBI says that they are conducting law enforcement activities, but at this time the agency is not saying more. Ellwood City Medical Center closed in December after the state banned the hospital from admitting patients for various health and safety regulations. Years of financial trouble had plagued…

Wolverines Finish 14th In Buckeye Classic Wrestling Tournament; Walley Takes 1st

On Saturday, the Ellwood City Wolverines wrestling team traveled to Rayland, Ohio for a 26-team Buckeye Local Panther Classic Wrestling Tournament. Ellwood City finished 14th as a team with Austin Walley taking 1st place in his weight class.  Rodney Grymes narrowly missed the medal stand, finishing 4th overall in his 220-pound weight class. Walley used two victories each in under ninety seconds to advance early before battling Howard Congdon of West Mifflin Area in a nearly five-minute match. Gordmans to Open Ellwood Location in February with Grand Opening Brand Bash

Apparel and home décor retailer Gordmans will replace Peebles in Franklin Plaza on Route 288 and will open its doors on February 18 at 9 a.m. The grand opening festivities will kick off with a ribbon cutting and follow with a $1,000 donation presented to Riverside Beaver County School District. The opening is one of 23 in Pennsylvania for the retailer.
