ECASD Announces Plans for Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs)

Ellwood City Area School District recently released a letter to families announcing Flexible Instruction Days (FIDs). FIDs allow the district to conduct remote learning when the weather prohibits safe travel to in person learning at the school facilities. According to Superintendent Dr. Wesley Shipley, the district has been approved to use up to five FIDS during inclement weather conditions. ECASD to Move to Remote Learning for Three Days

Ellwood City Area School will temporarily move to remote learning for the three days leading up to the Christmas Break. The days include Dec. 20, 21, and 22. Teachers and Instructional aides will work remotely with students for a full day on Monday and Tuesday and a half-day on Wednesday. “This is an effort to reduce exposure to COVID prior to the holidays,” said Superintendent Dr. Wesley Shipley. A buzz was injected into the Ellwood City basketball program last year as the boys team rode the wave of a cinderella WPIAL Playoff run and captured the school’s first ever WPIAL Basketball Championship in March. Wampum held its 49th Annual Christmas Parade on Saturday. Over 50 units, including cars, floats, bands and marching groups participated in the parade. which is billed as the biggest Christmas parade in Lawrence County. This year the parade was dedicated to Frank Yoho of Wayne Township, who had portrayed Santa Claus in the parade for 28 years. Ellwood City held its annual Light Up Night in downtown Ellwood City on Friday with the official lighting of the Christmas tree and ensuing fireworks display. After a year hiatus, the event returned with various activities for families and vendors set up on Lawrence Avenue. A horse-drawn sleigh, a local singer, a DJ and a brass quintet playing Christmas carols all welcomed visitors for Ellwood City and the surrounding communities who descended on Lawrence Avenue for the evening. CARELESS DRIVING, ELUDING POLICE: Three New Castle individuals are charged after fleeing from police on roadways in Ellwood City on October 30. According to the criminal complaint, at approximately 1:41 a.m, police observed three side-by-side ATV utility vehicles at the intersection of Wampum Avenue and North Street playing music very loudly and revving the engines. As police exited the parking lot of 7-Eleven all three vehicles fled the area and police continued pursuit. Mayor Court Swears In New Police Officer

This week Mayor Anthony J. Court officially swore in William Daufen as a part-time police officer in the Borough of Ellwood City. “Officer Daufen brings 25 years of experience in law enforcement and is looking forward to working with him – to help protect the law abiding citizens of our community,” said Mayor Court in a statement.
