Borough Buildings to close Monday November 9

In an abundance of caution, the Borough of Ellwood City has decided to limit the access of all non-essential employees and visitors to all Borough-owned buildings. According to a release made available by the borough, this will take effect Monday, November 9, 2020 and will remain in effect until further notice. The borough’s highest priority is keeping its workers and the general public safe. Victory Over Japan Day, also known as VJ Day, and its 75-year anniversary was celebrated this week. Ellwood City Mayor Anthony Court & WW II Veterans from Ellwood City and American Legion Post #157, along with Lawrence County and Beaver County Honor Guards celebrated VJ Day at the American Legion Park. Mayor Anthony J. Court presented a Proclamation to American Legion Post, Commander Joe Fisher commending the victory. LHS Class of ’57 Awards Two Scholarships

Two Lincoln High School students received scholarships from the Lincoln High School Class of 1957. Hannah Rose Keally is this year’s recipient of the $5,000 scholarship given by the Lincoln High School Class of 1957 while Levi Alexander Smith received the $500 best essay award from the Class of ’57. Hannah is majoring in fashion design in the College of Arts at Kent State University which gave her a president’s achievement award and an honors distinction award. PLAY BALL! Koppel Baseball Scrimmage Game Played After Renovations

A short scrimmage game took place Friday evening in Koppel Borough after the Potter Baseball Tour visited and spend hours working on the borough baseball field. Borough volunteers helped put the finishing touches on the refurbished Sixth Avenue Baseball Field. Led by former Ellwood City pitching ace Jeff Potter, this elite team not only plays a month-long schedule against ball teams all over the northeast, they also perform community service in every town they visit.  The Potter’s Pirates spent three days laboring on the Historic Koppel diamond to make this pick-up game a reality. PIAA: Spring Sports Postponed Another Two Weeks

On Monday, Governor Wolf issued a “stay at home” directive to citizens in seven counties for the next two weeks. This directive also closes all commonwealth schools and all non-essential businesses for another two weeks. The Governor is taking a measured approach in mitigation to assist in combating the coronavirus. Therefore, the start of spring sports is postponed another two weeks and the possible re-start of the winter championships will continue to be on hold. Nathan Sciarro accounted for three scores Friday night for Riverside while Ben Hughes tossed three touchdown strikes, but the biggest score of the game – a late 2-point conversion – was thwarted by Freedom and the Bulldogs escaped with a 31-30 victory over the Panthers. Wolverines Keep Playoff Hopes Alive, Shutout Shady Side Academy

Ellwood City defeated Shady Side Academy 4-0 on Monday as Ryan Gibbons and Ryan Hampton combined to toss a three-hit shutout. Ellwood City fired up the offense in the first inning, when Samuel DiCaprio singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run. The Wolverines put up a four-spot in the first frame, accounting for all of the game’s offense. Both teams accounted for only seven hits – all singles. Gibbons got the win for the Wolverines. Hundreds of children, of all ages, swarmed the Ewing Park grounds on a spring-like Saturday for the 24th Annual Ellwood City Easter Egg Hunt. According to their social media page, “[the hunt] had roughly 720 children lots of candy got handed out.along with cookies from Eat N Park. This was one of the best attendance we have had in a long time. The support we got from our community was amazing” The free event featured over 9,000 colored eggs and 30 golden eggs handed out. PHOTOS: Annual Memorial Day Parade

Ninety-degree heat welcomed the hundreds of onlookers spread across town Monday morning during the annual Ellwood City Memorial Day Parade.  Youth organizations, marching bands, city and state officials, fire trucks, police cruisers, and other community members participated and marched in the parade honoring the men and women that died in military service for the United States of America. The parade took place across Ellwood City to Veterans Memorial Park where the closing ceremonies were held.  Members of the Ellwood City Civic Chorale performed at the conclusion of the ceremony.
