Iowa Caucus Results: Clinton Wins Democratic, Cruz Wins Republican, Both by One Delegate

Iowa- The results for the first primary of the 2016 presidential election season are in. In the Democratic race, Hillary Clinton won, if by the smallest margin, grabbing 22 delegates while Bernie Sanders claimed 21. Sanders only tailed Clinton by 0.2 of a percent. Thus, only two candidates remain viable contenders for the Democratic ticket. The third Democratic candidate, Martin O’Malley, dropped out of the race this morning. Iowa has 27 delegates for the Republican Party, which were more evenly distributed. Ted Cruz won, claiming eight. Donald Trump and Marco Rubio each had seven. Three of the other nine candidates…


Ellwood Girls Basketball Thrashes Lincoln Park

Karrington Ketterer scored the game high of 14 points in yesterday’s away win against Lincoln Park. The Ellwood City girls basketball team maintained a steady lead through the first three quarters. Although Lincoln Park’s offense struck back in the final quarter, scoring 12-6, they didn’t overcome Ellwood’s lead, ending the game 42-32. In addition to Ketterer, Allie McKelvey and Emily Brown each scored seven points. Other scorers for Ellwood were Breonna Streit, six; Natalie Greco, four; Cortni Prine, three; and Isabella Roth, one.

Stealing Personal Checks According to the criminal complaint, on Nov. 27 of 2014, Drew Hall, 26, of Ellwood City had reportedly removed several checks from the residence of the victim, who is the grandmother of the accused. Hall then cashed the checks to multiple Woodforest Bank locations, which he signed in the victim’s signature without permission, totaling to $460. Weekly Basketball Recap: Ellwood City, Riverside Experience Section Losses

Riverside Girls Win One, Lose Won Defeat isn’t something the Riverside Girl’s basketball team has experienced much this season. The team started with a seven-game winning streak briefly interrupted by Neshannock before going on an eight-game streak. The last game in that streak was against Laurel in a home conference game on Monday, when Riverside won 79-50. Katie Stang and Sydney Wolf both broke 20 points, scoring 23 and 20, with the other half of Riverside’s point distributed among eight players. Borough Council January Meeting Brief

The following is a brief summary of the Ellwood City Borough Council meeting held on Jan. 19: Visitors Ralph Chiappetta, a former council member, asked council if the police department had implemented a schedule change passed by council last year and intended to reduce overtime. Council members replied that as that is Mayor Anthony J. Court’s duty, they are not yet aware if the changes have been implemented. School Board January Meeting Brief

The following is a brief summary of the Ellwood City Area School Board meeting held on Thursday, Jan. 14: Awards/Recognitions Perry Lower Intermediate was recognized as a 2016 Distinguished Title I School. Only five percent of Title I schools in the state receive this recognition and this is the second year in a row Perry earned this honor. Maddy McCommons was undefeated in three rounds of Linguistics, an academic competition, and thus qualified for the state competition. Ellwood City Girls Basketball on Three Game Roll

After a rough early season, the Ellwood City girls basketball has bounced back into swing. The Lady Wolverines won three games in a row and are now 3-4 in their class AAA conference. Following a 56-44 victory against Hopewell on Jan. 4, the girls defeated Lincoln Park 38-19 on Thursday, Jan. 7. Allie McKelvey and Karrington Ketterer paced the Wolverines with 10 points each and Cortni Prine had seven.
