Lawrence County Lightning Squirt Hockey Team Covert traveled to Cleveland Plays in the Rock and Roll Cleveland Cup Ice Hockey Tournament.

The Lawrence County Lightning Squirt Hockey Team Covert traveled to Cleveland this past weekend to play in the Rock and Roll Cleveland Cup Ice Hockey Tournament. The team is comprised of 16 kids from nine School Districts, four counties and two states. They play their home games at Hess Ice Rink in New Castle. On Friday night the Lightning matched up against the Pittsburgh Predators, where the team fought through first period jitters en route to a 4-1 win. Student Athletes Recognized at MAC Banquet

The Midwestern Athletic Conference held it’s 58th annual student athlete recognition banquet Wednesday night at the Fez in Hopewell. Each year the MAC honors one boy and one girl from each school district in the conference for displaying excellence on the field, court, classroom and community. This years recipients are Allie McKelvey and Nick Ioanilli from Lincoln High School and Morgan Bailey and Jason Dambach from Riverside. This year’s program, which included a Gala Buffet, was enjoyed by the students, family members, coaches and school representative from each district. Wolverines Tennis Team Sweeps Panthers

The Ellwood City tennis team swept a match against rival Riverside on Monday. In singles, Ellwood’s Christian Mittica, Trey Houk and Patrick Pawlak defeated Panther opponents Tyler Squicquero, Tyler McDonough and Hunter Paff. The following is a brief summary of the Ellwood City Borough Council meeting on Monday, March 21. Announcements There will be a special council meeting Thursday, March 24 at 8 a.m. to approve renovation plans for the rear of the Municipal Building. Police: Woman Assaults Woman after Extended Argument

Woman Assaults Woman According to the criminal complaint, on Thursday, March 17, at 4 a.m. , officers were dispatched to a Fifth Street apartment for a domestic disturbance. When the officers arrived they could hear screaming coming from the upstairs apartment. Officers entered the apartment and made contact with the victim and the defendant, Melissa Star Sabo, 35. When questioned, Sabo stated that they merely arguing. However, the victim stated that Sabo had harassed and threatened her. Photos: 23rd Annual Community Easter Egg Hunt

Nearly 600 children collected 6,000 eggs Saturday morning at the 23rd Annual Community Easter Egg hunt. The event, for children nine and under, took place at the Ewing Park tennis courts. Children hunted the eggs scattered throughout the courts, collecting candy and prizes. In addition to eggs filled with candy, hundreds of eggs had slips of paper redeemable for prizes, and 25 special eggs provided a super prize of a large Easter Basket with a stuffed animal and candy.

“Casualties of Steel,” a Documentary on the Closing of Ellwood’s U.S. Steel

In 1974, U.S. Steel closed its seamless tube mill in Ellwood City. “Casualties of Steel,” a documentary, chronicles the cultural impact of that closing through first hand accounts of the people who lived during the booming times of steel and its sad aftermath. This film was created by Ben Minett as a requirement for an ethnography class at Carnegie Mellon University. The documentary has no narrator and instead progresses through the voices of Ellwood City residents. Minett is a 1997 Riverside High School graduate. He created “Casualties of Steel” during his master’s degree studies at Carnegie Mellon University. Minett lives…


23rd Annual Community Easter Egg Hunt

The 23rd Annual Community Easter Egg Hunt is this Saturday, March 23. The event will be held in the tennis court area of Ewing Park and starts at 11 a.m. All children 9 and under are welcome. Over 5,000 eggs along with 25 golden eggs will be distributed throughout the five hunts. Treats will be given out to each child after their hunts.
