Ellwood City School Board Meeting Brief for April

The following is a brief summary of the Ellwood City Area School Board meeting held on April 14: Recognition: The board recognized junior Taylor Petrak for finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard freestyle at the swimming PIAA Championship at Bucknell University. Petrak has now earned five PIAA state medals, more than any athlete in Ellwood City history. Congratulations! Four Students Advance to K’NEX STEM Competition at Harrisburg

The 5th grade team of Maddy McCommons, Grady Smith, Hunter Rock and Hayden Slade won the K’NEX STEM Design Challenge at Penn State Beaver and will advance to the state competition on May 13 at Harrisburg. The team’s creation, the Bio Aquatic Research Facility (BARF), was required to be three meters tall, hold weights and be environmentally sound.  


Ellwood Boys and Girls Track Results from Laurel Meet

The Ellwood City boys and girls track teams lost to Laurel at a home meet on Tuesday. However, Ellwood athletes captured several first places. For the boys, distance runner Billy Lott won the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs while participating in a winning 4×800 meter relay team. Nick Ioanilli claimed first in the 100 meter dash and long jump. Also taking first for Ellwood were Keyshawn Gatto in 400 meter run and River Kelly in the shot put throw. Police: Aggravated Assault with a Knife

Women Assaults Man with Knife Devon Rand Crocker, 23, of Ellwood City, was accused of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children for an incident on April 3. According to the criminal complaint, officers responded to a domestic situation on Franklin Avenue at approximately 7:30 p.m. Investigating officers made contact with the victim, Crocker’s boyfriend, in the hallway of a second floor apartment. He reported that following a verbal altercation lasting several hours, Crocker attacked her mother and him with a knife. The victim was able to disarm Crocker, but was bitten repeatedly. Baseball and Softball Recap: Ellwood, Riverside Gather Wins

The Riverside baseball team played and won two games last week. On April 5, the Panthers defeated Vincentian Academy 4-3 and got a 2-0 win against Shenango on Thursday. For the Shenango win, juniors Ricky Wass and Dylan Speicher earned runs in the first and third innings. Michael Boswell pitched a near-perfect game with 13 strikeouts and only two hits against. The Panthers are now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in their conference. They play an away game at Laurel today, weather permitting. Police: Simple Assault During Easter Dinner

Simple Assault on Easter According to the criminal complaint, on March 27, police responded to a domestic dispute on Possum Hollow Road in New Beaver Borough. The accused, Candace Lane Freed, 56, got into an argument with the victim, her boyfriend. The argument escalated until it erupted into physical violence. Freed struck the victim several times around his head and neck. This fight would end up causing part of their Easter Dinner to fall on the ground. Riverside High School Eleventh Annual International Showcase – 2016

On Friday, April 1, 50 tenth grade Honors World Cultures students with the support of 25 International Club students presented the Eleventh Annual International Showcase of Countries at Riverside High School. Following months of preparation, displays that showcased 31 nations of the world were opened to students in the Riverside district from grade K through 8. 21 classes with over 300 students toured the Showcase this year. In addition, six exchange students currently living in Pennsylvania were participants.
