EC Jr. High Battles North Hills, Falls 7-1

Last week, the Lady Wolverines were trounced 15-0 in three innings by the North Hills Indians. On Tuesday evening, the junior high ladies fought hard for seven innings before falling short by a final score of 7-1. This was the third straight game in which the young team has been competitive against a Class AAAA foe that had previously mercy ruled them. Ellwood Boys Tennis Team Defeats Central Valley

The Lincoln High School Boy’s Varsity Tennis team moved within one match of a .500 section record yesterday, improving their section record to 3-4 with a hard-fought win over Central Valley. Trey Houk won at second singles, and the first singles team of Corey Hobbs and Shane Reisinger maintained their undefeated section status at first doubles, both with straight set wins. Riverside Seniors Boehm and Boswell Sign Letters of Intent

Two Riverside High School seniors signed letters of intent on Thursday, April 21 for NCAA Division II colleges. Ashley Boehm will be attending Seton Hill University in Greensburg to play softball. She is the daughter of Kerry and Paul Boehm. Michael Boswell will be attending Tiffin University in Toleda, Ohio to play baseball. He is the son of Mike and Nancy Boswell.

Lawrence County Primary Election Results

Aaron Bernstine won the Republican nomination for State Representative in the 10th Legislative District in a three-way race. In state and national elections, Lawrence County largely followed the trend throughout Pennsylvania, with Donald Trump winning a majority for the Republican presidential primary and Hillary Clinton a majority in the Democratic primary. 10,979 Republican ballots and 11,785 Democratic ballots were cast in Lawrence County representing 47.60 percent of registered Republicans and 51.09 percent of registered Democrats. We’ve gotten our first reader submissions to our call for photos and videos of the Wayne Township bald eagles, which includes one of the eagles in flight. It doesn’t appear that the eaglets are big enough to stick above the nest yet. Remember, to find the nest, drive to Rodger’s Park in Ellport, colloquially referred to as “The Hole,” and walk down the nature trail toward the Connoquenessing and several islands. Yard Waste and Recycling Calendar Available on Borough Website

The Ellwood City Borough wishes to inform residents that a yard waste and recycling calendar can be accessed on the borough website. The schedule includes 2016 and 2017. Yard waste pickups will be held for one week each month from May through November, except for October which will have two weeks. Recycling is every other week year round. The calendar can be viewed here.


Earth Day Attracts Hundreds to Ewing Park to Celebrate the Planet

An estimated 700 visitors passed through Ewing Park to visit the annual Lawrence County Earth Day Celebration. Although the weather was chilly, it didn’t discourage attendance, and the sun shined throughout the festivities. “This Year’s Earth Day Celebration brought Ellwood City, New Castle and the surrounding areas together to laugh, learn, create and celebrate our beautiful planet,” Tracey Ferguson, Lawrence County Earth Day co-organizer, said. Shaler Defeats EC Jr. High 10-3

The Lady Wolverines put up a valiant effort Thursday evening but Shaler scored four runs in the top of the seventh to come away with a 10-3 victory. Maura Agostinelli and Zoe Maine led the six hit attack with two singles apiece. Taylor Covert had a two out of two run single and Madi Krugh also contributed a single to the cause.
