Council Votes to Pass Increased Tax Mill
The hot topic of the council meeting last night was the proposed 2017 budget, including the tax mill increase from 7.75 to 8.75. Both the 2017 budget and the tax mill increase were approved by council, but not without discussion. The budget was passed in a 5-2 vote by council, with council members Judy Dici and Marilyn Mancini voting against it. The new tax mill is expected to increase property taxes just over a dollar per every thousand the property is worth; so for the average property owned in Ellwood (about $60,000) taxes will increase roughly $60 for the 2017…

Cherlyn was born on December 4, 1960 in Ellwood City to William J. and Catherine Hall Miller of Ellport. She had graduated from Riverside High School with the class of 1979, and had earned a Technical Degree in Mechanical Drawing. BREAKING: Ellwood City Man Shot by Police
This morning, I-376, one of the most commonly traveled routes in the area, was closed while helicopters and police were investigating an incident. Shawn Hobel, 34, of Ellwood City was shot by police officials and is undergoing surgery after leading several Lawrence County police departments on a chase. According to reports, the chase started around 3:30a.m., when Hobel -who had a woman passenger in the car- did not stop for Shenango Township officers attempting to pull him over for a traffic violation. Criminal Complaints: Man Faces Felony Charges After Assault
After an incident occurred last month, Zachary Franklin Pounds, 20, of Fox Street is facing felony charges. Pounds and his older brother, Joseph, caused a disturbance at Weisz’s Hazel Manor, resulting in a man needing to be life flown to a Pittsburgh hospital. The two brothers were ordering food when Zachary walked up to a man and started yelling profound racial slurs, punching the man and striking him over the head with a beer bottle, the victim was knocked on the ground.
