Mr. Gary A. Smiley, 72, of West Pittsburgh passed away peacefully at his residence on Saturday, May 9th, 2026 surrounded by his loving family.
Gary was born in Youngstown, Ohio on October 4th, 1953 to the late Betty (Como) Caravaggio. He graduated from the Nurnberg American High School in Germany. Gary enlisted with the United States Army on December 20th, 1971 and served until his honorable discharge on December 19th, 1977 with the rank of SP4. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. After serving with the Army, Gary worked at Rockwell International until it closed and then for Berner International both in New Castle as an Air Curtain Assembler. He attended various churches in the area and most recently at Hoover Heights Church in New Castle. An outdoorsman, Gary is a member of the Castlewood Rod and Gun Club and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and reading his Bible daily.
He is survived by his wife, Ralphetta (Conforti) Smiley whom he married on November 19th, 2010, sons, Alan (Mindy) Smiley and Andy Smiley both of West Pittsburgh, step daughter, Lisa Valentino and her companion Michael Shook of Rochester, step son, Joseph (Shannon) Valentino of Pittsburgh, grandchildren, Nicholas, Ava, Phoebe, and Mallory, sister, Kimberly (Dennis) McAnallen of Edinburg, and his brother, Robert “Bobby” (Debora) Smiley of Volant. He is also survived by his in-laws, Bernadette and Larry Honsaker, Teresa and John Kosele, Anthony Conforti and his girlfriend Sandy Mitiko, and Angela and Mike Lauster.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Betty, step-father, Tom Caravaggio, sisters, Carol Smiley, Barb Smiley, and Erla Smiley, and his brother, John Smiley.
Following Gary’s wishes there will not be a public service. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home and Crematory Inc.
