At stake is not only the title, but $25,000 that Hatkevich says she will use part of to help educate the future.
“I would invest in diverse art materials, digital tools, and photography equipment,” she said. “Funds would support classroom upgrades like storage, equipment, and outdoor seating for open-air creating. I would also fund visiting artists, field trips to museums, and student exhibitions to connect learning to real-world art experiences.”
In addition, the favorite teacher will also win:
- A trip to Hawaii. America’s Favorite Teacher will enjoy a well-deserved trip to Hawaii, relaxing on pristine beaches and exploring lush landscapes. This rewarding escape will let them unwind, recharge, and celebrate the incredible impact they’ve made on the future.
- An appearance in Reader’s Digest, celebrating their remarkable influence on education and showcasing a legacy of dedication, creativity, and impact that will inspire millions of readers across the nation for years to come.
- A school assembly with Bill Nye, who is bringing the energy by celebrating America’s Favorite Teacher with a school assembly designed to spark curiosity, fuel imagination, and inspire every student in the room.
A Butler native, Hatkevich has been a teacher for 12 years—9 at Ellwood City Area School District and 3 years at a school in Crossett, Arkansas.
She saw the “America’s Favorite Teacher” contest on social media and became curious about it. What sparked her interest was the possibility of an assembly with Bill Nye.
“I grew up watching Bill Nye the Science Guy and I thought that would be really cool for the kids,” she said. “Initially I thought that was the prize, then I saw the other prizes too.”
Hatkevich loves being a teacher and notes seeing the kids grow into promising young adults is the best part of it.
I love getting to build relationships with students and getting to see them blossom into artists and athletes and watching them grow into young adults,” she said. “My #1 reason for teaching is the relationships with the students. I love watching them fall in love with art. And then it is so great getting to reconnect with them later. I’ve seen students become entrepreneurs and all sorts of things. Seeing them suceed in life makes it all worth it.”
Hatkevich said there are 4 groups in the contest, and the top 1 in each group on Thursday moves forward. Hatkevich is currently 4th place in her group, and needs your votes.
