Dr Brad Brown’s Magic leaves Historical Society Spellbound

Members and guests were entertained by the magic and stories of local magician and dentist, Dr. Brad Brown at the November meeting of the Ellwood City Area Historical Society on November 10th.

The near-capacity crowd at the Bob and Janice Barensfeld Meeting Room learned how Dr. Brown became interested in magic at an early age thanks to weekly magician guests on the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. It was these performances that drove him to pursue the art for himself because as he said, “I just couldn’t stand not knowing how the tricks were done.” This led to countless hours of practice as well as studying under greats such as David Copperfield and Criss Angel in Las Vegas. He used his magic skills through college as he earned a degree in Biochemistry at Columbia University and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Ohio State University.

After sharing his brief history, Dr. Brown amazed the audience with a show centered on predictions – naming cards pulled from decks, making volunteer choices seem to be predetermined, and even knowing what card was “chosen” from an imaginary deck. Each trick was more fascinating to the crowd than the previous.

And in keeping with the history setting, Dr. Brown shared many vintage photos of the historic building that once belonged to Ellwood City forefather A.E. Connor and now houses his dental practice at the corner on Fifth Street and Fountain Avenue.

In other Society news: For those unable to visit the ECAHS museum during the day, the History Center will be open during the Ellwood City Light Up Night on Dec. 5. Please feel free to get out of the cold and see what the ECAHS has to offer. Our next general meeting will be on January 12, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. when Duck Run Blueberry farm will make a presentation. The meeting at the History Center is free and open to the public.
