24The Riverside Lady Panthers soccer team used a shootout victory to secure its opening round victory in the WPIAL Class-A Playoffs on Tuesday at Central Valley.
In the close encounter that went the distance, freshman Emma Jeannette stepped up and tucked home the winning penalty as #5 Riverside (8-3-1, 8-1-1) won 5-4 on penalties against #12 Riverview (8-5-0, 7-3-0).
The Panthers victory avenges last years opening round loss at the hands of Sewickley Academy and will pit Riverside against #4 seed and defending Class-A Champion Springdale in the 2025 quarterfinals.
Riverside will travel to Springdale for a 12:00 p.m. noon match-up.
The Dynamos captured the 2024 WPIAL crown last year with a 5-3 win over Winchester Thurston and feature a balanced attack with sophomore Tessa Derringer, senior Hailey Marchlewski and freshman Adele Walters-Vrabel, senior Lacey Shondeck combining for 40 goals.
Sophomore midfielder Ashley Hare helps control the field for the Panthers along with junior goalkeeper Saeryn Hoover. Riverside scored 30 goals and gave up 10 in its 12 regular-season games.

Avonworth 3, Riverside 2: Rice University recruit Julia Cernich recorded 24 kills as the #11 seeded Antelopes (13-6) upset the #6 seeded Panthers (11-4) in a match played at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart on Tuesday. Avonworth won the first two sets 25-18, 25-20. Riverside rallied to win the next two 17-25, 23-25, but the Antelopes won the fifth set 15-13 to earn the opening round victory in the Class 2A WPIAL Playoffs.
