In a moving tribute to a life cut short, athletes from across the community will gather for the 1st Annual Carter Huzinec Memorial Powerlifting Meet and Strongman Event for Traumatic Brain Injury and Awareness & Support, honoring the memory of a young man whose passion for fitness and love for life left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
The event will be held at 10 a.m. on March 22 at the New Beaver Borough VFD, 898 Wampum New Galilee Road, in Wampum and is presented by Wampum Fitness and Carter4LifeCompany 501(c)(3). Competitors and spectators are welcome. The deadline to register is March 1. Interested participants can register here: http://www.wampumfitness.com/meet.html. There will be numerous events that participants can register for (please see link and flyer in gallery). The event will feature food, a raffle, vendors, and swag and merchandise.
“This is very emotional for me,” said Chrissi Huzinec, Carter’s mom. “Carter was my only son. He was funny, and such a good son. I am so happy to keep his memory and light alive.”
Carter, who tragically passed away at the age of 20 in June of 202 after a traumatic brain injury, sustained in an ATV accident, is remembered not just for his strength in the gym, but for the kindness and dedication he showed to those around him. As mentioned by his mom, Carter was known for being the fun, playful, kindhearted, helpful, hardworking friend to all and was always able to bring a smile to the faces of everyone he was around.
Proceeds of the event will benefit the Pittsburgh Brain Injury Awareness Association.
Chrissi said this event is the perfect way to honor her son’s memory.
“He was an avid gym kid,” she said. “He lifted six days a week. It was his love.”
She attributes his love of lifting and much of his growth into a good man to Wampum Fitness.
“We wouldn’t be able to do this without their support and equipment,” she said. “Wampum Fitness took Carter under their wing and they helped him find a passion. They are very special people and have been very supportive of me. We are closer than ever.”
And although Chrissi has hosted liftathons in honor of Carter in previous years, this is the first expanded event under her new non-profit Carter4LifeCompany 501(c)(3).
“I am trying to find the good in the bad and to be able to help others in Carter’s memory,” she said.
Chrissi said keeping Carter’s memory alive has been a comfort to her. She said that she and Carter’s Dad Michael Huzinec have helped establish some scholarship opportunities for the students at the Lawrence County Career and Technical Institute. According to Chrissi, Carter attended “Vo-Tech” and the school changed his life, leading him to a technical career that he loved. Carter graduated from Lawrence County Vo-Tech in 2018 and then was a laborer at Universal Refractories in Wampum. They hope to continue to provide scholarships in Carter’s name.
