Our dear Verna Lee Cortes, 85 of Ellwood City passed away on Thursday, May 25th, 2023 at the UPMC Passavant Hospital in McCandless Township.
Verna Lee was born on January 13th, 1938 in Ellwood City to the late Violet M. (Matheny) Chapman. She was a member of the Divine Grace Parish, Holy Redeemer Church, where she was a Christian Mother and Bazaar Volunteer for many years. Verna Lee worked in sales at Airway Industries and then as a beauty consultant for Elizabeth Arden at Kaufmann’s and Lancome at Horne’s. She will be always loved, never forgotten, and forever missed.
She is survived by her best friend and devoted husband of more than 67 years, John “Jack” Cortes whom she married on April 7th, 1956, children, Jacqueline (Zachary) Powell of Ellwood City, Steven (Donna) Cortes of Lake Worth, FL, and Leslie (Robert) Bortz of New Galilee, her grandchildren, whom she “loved to pieces”, Ashlee (Aaron) Gray, Tyler Powell, Sierra Cortes, Paris (Zack) Holt, Brandon Bortz, and Dylan Bortz, and her two beloved great-grandchildren, Connor and Carson Gray.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 31st, from 6:00 – 9:00 pm at the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home and Crematory. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, June 1st, at 10:00 am, with Father Mark Thomas officiating. Christian Mothers are asked to meet at the church by 9:50 to form an honor guard. Interment will follow at the Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
Memorial donations in Verna Lee’s name may be made to the Holy Redeemer Angel Fund.
