Edith Bell Metheny, 96

Edith Bell (Baker) Metheny, age 96, of Chippewa Township, went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 22, 2019.

Eadie was born September 6, 1923 in North Sewickley Twp., PA in the family farmhouse, to the late Michael Sr. and Annette Obney Baker.  She was a direct (and proud!) descendant of the pioneer Beaver County family of George Baker. She was a member of First Reformed Presbyterian Church in Patterson Twp.

A graduate of Beaver High School class of 1941, she then earned her bachelor’s degree in Education from Geneva College and her master’s degree in Special Reading from Slippery Rock University.  She taught in the Big Beaver Falls Area School District, loved her students, and always enjoyed seeing them and their families in the years following her retirement.

Eadie was a member of many local clubs and civic organizations including The Valley Exemplars, Chippewa Woman’s Club, Outlook Club, Beaver Falls Garden Club and more.  She will be remembered as a generous hostess who enjoyed crowding her home and table with guests for parties, holidays, birthdays, and Sunday dinners.  She loved to travel and especially enjoyed visiting New Mexico and her sister Mary who lived there.

The joy of Eadie’s life was her family. She will be missed by her four sons and daughters-in-law:  Gregg (Patricia) of Beaver Falls, Jeffry (Liz) of Davis, CA, Carey (Kim) of Holly, MI and Quinn (Heather) of Ellwood City; grandchildren Heather, David, Linda, Lydia, and Ella; great-grandchildren Rihely, Quentin, and Macklin, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Eadie was preceded in death in 1971 by her beloved husband, David B. Metheny whom she married in a small ceremony on December 18, 1943 in Valdosta, GA.   She was the youngest of 12 and was preceded in death by five sisters: Juliet, Josephine, Doris, Martha and Mary, and six brothers: John, James, Daniel, Michael Jr., George and William.

There will be no visitation.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Eadie’s family would like to thank the staff members of both Elmcroft of Chippewa and Grane Hospice for their many years of loving and attentive care.

Friends may, if they wish, make memorial contributions in Eadie’s name to Beaver County Genealogy and History Center, 250 East End Ave., Beaver, PA 15009 or Beaver County Historical Research and Landmarks Foundation, 1235 3rd Ave., Freedom, PA  15042.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Joseph A. Tomon, Jr. Funeral Home, 97 Grim Avenue, Ellport.
