Samuel C. Mullin, Jr.

 

Samuel C. Mullin Jr. was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on February 19, 1930 and passed away in Ellwood City, PA, on March 22, 2018. Aside from his first year of life, college and the Army, he lived his 88 years in Ellwood City. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948 and attended Thiel College on a football scholarship. Sam was a member of the 1950 Thiel College undefeated football team. Sam was drafted into the Army after graduation from Thiel College, and was assigned to the Army Chemical Biological Center in Maryland. After three years of service, Sam returned to Ellwood City and worked for Callery Chemical Company for ten years. He then worked for U.S. Steel in Ellwood City for twenty years as Chief of Safety, and then worked for St. Joe Lead Company/American Zinc Corporation as Director of Labor Relations, retiring in 2004.

On November 24, 1956, Sam married the former Sara Marie Kast at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellwood City. Sam and Sara had four children, Sam III, Susan, Scott and Stevan. Sam was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church his entire life. He was a past President of the Church Council, served as a lector and usher, and taught adult Sunday School. He was a 32nd degree Mason. Sam was a member of the Ellwood City Jaycees, the Ellwood Chamber of Commerce, and the Ellwood City Historical Society. He was a long time member and an officer in the Ellwood City Saxon Club.

Sam’s greatest passion, besides his family, was the Red Barn Theater in Fombell, PA . A founding member of the theater in 1955, Sam was a cast member of over 40 plays. In recognition of his dedication to the theater, the Red Barn Players annually award the Samuel C. Mullin Jr. “Sammy Award” for outstanding service to the Red Barn Theater and the performing arts.

Before Sara’s death eight months ago, Sam and Sara enjoyed church events, evenings at the Saxon Club, participating in and supporting Red Barn Productions, and spending time with the family. Sam is survived by a son, Samuel (Karen) Mullin III of Fairfield, CA; a daughter, Susan (Kevin) Collins of Chesapeake Beach, MD; a son, Scott Mullin of Zelienople, PA; six grandchildren: Lauren McConnell, Rachael Mullin, Kylee Collins, Sean Collins, Cree Mullin, Jake Mullin; a sister, Janet (Jim) McRoberts of Lake Hauto, PA. In addition to his parents and his wife, Sam was preceded in death by a son, Stevan M. Mullin.

Friends will be received on Saturday, April 7^th from 9:30 AM until 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church.  A Masonic Service will take place at 11:00 AM, followed by the Veteran’s Honor Guard at 11:15 AM.  The funeral service will begin after the Honor Guard at 11:30 AM with Pastor Peggy Suhr-Barkley.  Interment will follow in Slippery Rock Cemetery.  Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Joseph A. Tomon, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 97 Grim Avenue, Ellport.
