John Richard “Dick” Shaffer, 89, of Shenango Twp. passed away Friday, May 1, 2026, at Northview Estates following a brief illness.
Born January 2, 1937, in New Castle, he was the son of the late John B. and Sara Badger Shaffer.
Dick received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Slippery Rock University. He taught geometry and trigonometry at Shenango High School for many years until his retirement. He loved collecting military memorabilia and driving his tractor on his property. A skilled woodworker, he crafted many beautiful pieces of furniture that his family will enjoy for generations.
In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting with his sons and teaching them those skills. Dick was also a talented gunsmith. His hunting rifles, built over the years for family and friends, are still in use and appreciated for the level of detail and care he put into each one. He cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Sharon Weisbaker Shaffer; two sons, Christopher (Lori) Shaffer and Reed (Sherri) Shaffer; daughter, Amanda (Jay) Bruce all of Shenango Twp.; three granddaughters, Diana (John) Bonino, Katherine (Nathan) Land, and Rena Shaffer; and two grandsons, William Bruce and Jonathan Shaffer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sara Jane “Sally” Booher.
Interment was in Castleview Memorial Park.
