2026 Spring Sports Q&A: Riverside Athletes

The start of spring sports is upon us, so we took the opportunity catch up with the athletes of the Riverside sports teams to see what they are doing to prepare for the upcoming rivalries and to offer some perspective on the season ahead and their plans for the future.

 

Logan Young

Sport? Baseball

Grade? 12

How many years have you have played? 12

What are you most looking forward to in the upcoming season? Spending one last year with my teammates.

How do you hope to improve this year? I hope to improve by taking more walks and getting on base more.

What do you feel is your biggest strength? My biggest strength is not striking out and making contact.

What is your favorite part of it? Creating memories with all my amazing teammates.

Who do you feel is your biggest rivalry this upcoming season? I feel the biggest rivalry is just the next game we have to take on game at a time.

What have you and the team been doing to prepare for the season? We have putting in practice all throughout the winter in the gym.

What has been your favorite memory been over the years? My favorite memory has to be the bus rides on the way home from the games.

What will you miss about playing your sport after graduation? Hanging out with my teammates and bonding with them.

What are your future plans after graduation? I plan to attend Robert Morris University for Sports Management

Do you plan to continue to play sports after high school? No

Ayla Sterner

Sport? Softball

Grade? 12

How many years have you have played? 13 years

What are you most looking forward to in the upcoming season? Facing the competition in our section

How do you hope to improve this year? As a team I hope we can improve our record and make it further into playoffs

What do you feel is your biggest strength? Keeping a positive attitude and encouraging teammates

What is your favorite part of it? Spending time with my teammates who have become my best friends

Who do you feel is your biggest rivalry this upcoming season? Shenango

What have you and the team been doing to prepare for the season? Working daily in the gym and outside on hitting, fielding, lifting and becoming mentally prepared for our season

What has been your favorite memory been over the years? Making it to states my junior year

What will you miss about playing your sport after graduation? My teammates

What are your future plans after graduation? I plan to attend Slippery Rock University to study early childhood and special education.

Do you plan to continue to play sports after high school? No

Hunter Garcia

Sport? track

Grade? 12

How many years have you have played? I ran track for 4 years

What are you most looking forward to in the upcoming season? I’m looking to pr in my 100m dash

How do you hope to improve this year? I will improve by doing more plyometrics cardio, and working out

Who do you feel is your biggest rivalry this upcoming season? My biggest rivalry is probably Mohawk

What have you and the team been doing to prepare for the season? My team and I been preparing our handoffs for our 4×1 and our condition

What has been your favorite memory been over the years? My favorite memories are hanging out with friends during track and meeting new kids from different schools

What will you miss about playing your sport after graduation? I will miss being with my friends and coaches

What are your future plans after graduation? My plan after high school Is joining the electrical union

Jocilene Cummings

Sport?  Softball

Grade? Senior

How many years have you have played? I have played since I was 6 years old

What are you most looking forward to in the upcoming season? I am looking forward to playoffs and hopefully states

How do you hope to improve this year? I hope to improve my hitting and my relationships with my teammates

What do you feel is your biggest strength? I think my biggest strength is the ability to stay calm under pressure

What is your favorite part of it? My favorite part of the sport is when we have fun and play loose

Who do you feel is your biggest rivalry this upcoming season? I think our biggest rival this season is shenango

What have you and the team been doing to prepare for the season? Our team has done a lot of work in the batting cages and watching film to prepare for these tougher teams

What has been your favorite memory been over the years? My favorite memory in the past years was beating Laurel in the playoffs

What will you miss about playing your sport after graduation? The thing I will miss the most is playing alongside with my mom, sister, cousin, and best friend

What are your future plans after graduation? After graduation I will be continuing my softball career at the D2 level and majoring in Early Childhood Education at Malone University
