144 bricks … not just bricks, but bricks that memorialized the loved ones of Ellwood City Residents were moved from the Ellwood City Hospital site to a new permanent home in Ewing Park.
Ellwood City Mayor Anthony J. Court led the initiative to remove the memorial bricks from the former Ellwood City Hospital site. Thanks to his leadership and coordination with Borough Manager Kevin Swogger and the public works department, the bricks were successfully and efficiently moved to their new home in Ewing Park.

Mayor Anthony J. Court was approached by several concerned residents regarding the memorial bricks displayed at the former site of the Ellwood City Hospital. Court had he was contacted by five concerned citizens who had purchased bricks in memorial of a loved one and in observance of the former hospital’s 100th anniversary. With the sale of the property, many worried about the fate of the bricks they had purchased and dedicated. In response to these concerns, Mayor Court stepped in to ensure the bricks were handled with care and properly relocated.
“It was my pleasure to help out these citizens, and I was happy to be able to relocate the bricks memorializing their loved ones,” Court said.
The project was a team effort including the public works department who laid the foundation, built the frame, and placed the bricks.
From the minute I told them, they sprung into action, and it was all done within 2 days of labor.
Overall between coordination of the move and the actual labor, the bricks had a new home within approximately six days.
Court said in addition to the wall that contains the bricks, he has arranged to add flower pots and flowers will be coming. He said when looking for an area to build the wall, he thought this was the perfect place.
The bricks are facing the street, and the wall is close enough that you can even read some of the names as you are driving by,” Court said. “I think this is a win-win for everyone.”
