Ellwood City Basketball Teams Eye PIAA Playoffs This Weekend

Ellwood City boys and girls basketball teams each qualified for the PIAA State Championships, but each will face a district champion in the PIAA 3A opening round this weekend.

For the girls, the Lady Wolverines are the fourth-place team out of District 7 (WPIAL) and will face Karns City at Moniteau High School on Friday, March 7th at 7:00 p.m.

Naomi Venesky scored 20 points of her game-high 25 points in the first half as Karns City completed its three-peat with a 50-32 win over Cranberry Area in its District 9 Class 3A championship game.

The Ellwood City girls basketball team was bounced in the semifinals of the WPIAL Class 3A playoffs after its opening round victory over Seton LaSalle and thrilling quarterfinals victory over Keystone Oaks.

For the boys, the Wolverines enter the PIAA 3A playoffs to face District 10 champion Mercer at Mercer High School on Saturday, March 8th at 1:00 p.m.

Ben Godfrey scored 15 points to take over and help Mercer beat Iroquois 56-45 to claim their first title in nearly four decades. For the season, Jayden Amos leads the Mustangs with 13 points per game followed by Tristan McCracken with 11.3 points per game.

The Ellwood City boys basketball team fell in the quarterfinals of its WPIAL Class 3A playoffs to eventual Class 3A champion South Allegheny. The Wolverines picked up an opening round victory over South Park.

First Round tickets will go on sale Monday, March 3rd.

Admission price is $8.00 for adults and for students. THERE WILL BE NO TICKETS SOLD AT THE GATE.
