Caitlin Kretizer and Delaney Sturgeon combined to score 11 points in the fourth quarter to spark the Lady Wolverines to a 40-37 comeback victory over #4 Keystone Oaks Wednesday night.
After a sluggish first half that left the halftime score 18-14 in favor of the Golden Eagles, Ellwood City found momentum and scoring in the second half, putting up 26 second half points.
The two teams combined to shoot 10-45 from the field in the first half.
Kreitzer and her younger sister Carah accounted for all eleven third quarter points for Ellwood City but the Lady Wolverines trailed 30-25 entering the final quarter where Ellwood City rallied.
Caitlin finished with a team-high 13 points and five assists while Carah scored all eight of her points in the second half to power the rally. Delaney Sturgeon finished with 10 points and six rebounds for Ellwood City. Kayla Jones knocked home two 1st quarter 3-pointers en route to six points.
Keystone Oaks (19-3 Overall) did not have a player reach double figures in scoring. Alayna Wagner finished with eight points and seven assists but also committed seven turnovers in the defeat.
#12 seed Ellwood City (15-8 Overall) will next face #1 seed Shady Side Academy in the WPIAL Class-3A semifinal round on Saturday 2/22 at a place and time TBA
Karis Thomas led all scorers with 19 points for Shady Side Academy (23-0 Overall) as the defeated #8 Riverside 55-20 at Fox Chapel Wednesday night.
With the victory, the Lady Wolverines clinched an appearance in the PIAA playoffs.
