PHOTOS: Wolverines Sweep Tigers In Senior Night Doubleheader

It was a long evening Tuesday as the Ellwood City boys and girls basketball squads teamed up for a senior night double header against Beaver Falls.

Two overtime thrillers later, both teams collected victories amid a combined eleven periods of play.

First, the Lady Wolverines used an overtime 3-pointer by senior guard Kayla Jones with less than a minute left to inch away from the Tigers and secure a 59-54 victory.

Powered by four first half 3-pointers and 14 points Jones led the Wolverines to a 27-18 halftime advantage. She knocked home six 3-pointers in the victory en route to a team-high 20 points.

Beaver Falls rallied in the second half as Dreaven Haskins poured in 17 second half points. The game went to overtime where Ellwood City pulled away for the five point victory.

Caitlin Kreitzer has a tremendous all-around effort Tuesday, finishing with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists. Delaney Sturgeon posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The section victory for the Lady Wolverines improved their record to 8-5 Section 3A-1 (13-7 Overall). Three teams in the section share five losses, incluing Riverside, and Ellwood City will look to gain in the standings when the next travel to Quaker Valley (9-4 Section 3A-1).

Not to be outdone, the ensuing boys game featured similar drama and double the overtime fun.

Ellwood City used a 16-point burst in the second overtime to pull away for its 76-63 2OT victory over Beaver Falls.

Sophomore guard Kaleb Servick scored a team-high 21 points (11-13 FTs) and added eight assists for the Wolverines. Big man Aaron Lake posted a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds.

Chuckie Sweinsberg joined the duo in double figures, finishing with 14 points and seven rebounds. Lake and Schweinsberg each finished 7-11 from the free throw stripe as Ellwood City held a decisive advantage at the line in the contest. The Wolverines finished 29-42 from the free throw line in the game. Beaver Falls only attempted 19 free throws.

Dajuan Flenory finished with a game-high 26 points for the Tigers (2-19 overall) while Cartier Williams knocked home seven 3-pointers in defeat.

Ellwood City, now 13-8 Overall (8-3 Section 3A-1), will turn its focus and travel to section-leading Aliquippa on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. varsity tip.
