HARRISBURG – Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R-Butler/Lawrence) today announced the award of a $400,000 state grant to Wampum Borough, Lawrence County, aimed at addressing critical infrastructure needs within the community. This funding will enable the borough to undertake a comprehensive water system upgrade, focusing on the removal of outdated and hazardous lead water lines and replacing them with modern, safe materials.
“This grant is a game-changer for Wampum Borough. It will directly improve the health and safety of residents by replacing outdated lead water lines, which have long been a public concern,” said Bernstine. “These improvements will not only safeguard the community’s drinking water but also bolster the overall infrastructure, ensuring a higher quality of life for the residents now and for future generations.”
The project involves replacing about 8,000 linear feet of old lead water pipes with a new 6-inch ductile iron water line. It also includes reconnecting water services that don’t contain lead, making connections to the existing water system, and installing new valves, fire hydrants and other necessary equipment. The project will also restore any areas affected by the construction.
The funding is part of the Local Share Account grant program, which is supported by state gaming revenues and administered by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA), a dedicated agency responsible for overseeing investments in Pennsylvania’s economic development.
