PHOTOS: PA Turnpike Beaver River Project Continues Into Its Next Stage

People in the area will see some piers and beams are in place as the project continues into its next stage.

The project is currently in stage four of the eight project stages. Turnpike travel lanes have been shifted southward to accommodate construction activities for the new bridge and roadway alignment. The contractor has completed some of the piers for the new westbound Beaver River bridge crossing. New bridge construction over Big Beaver Boulevard (PA Route 18) at the Beaver Valley interchange continues with precast concrete beams recently having been set on the superstructure and bridge deck construction will follow into the fall months. Construction on the remaining piers on the westbound bridge is in progress and should be completed later this fall. Pier table and segmental construction for the new westbound bridge is underway and will continue into 2025.

Earthwork continues as well with excavation for the northward realignment of the mainline turnpike and the relocation of Thompson Run Road, which will fully reopen in November. New drainage installation and erosion and sedimentation control continues as construction progresses.

Big Beaver Boulevard reconstruction continues with traffic now shifted to the southbound lanes to allow the reconstruction of the northbound lanes and the completion of a sanitary sewer line relocation. Traffic configurations on Big Beaver Boulevard and the interchange ramps will change after the Labor Day holiday. Drivers are encouraged to continue to use caution when traveling through the construction zone for changing traffic patterns, ramp configurations, and intermittent flagging.

Temporary ramps from Big Beaver Boulevard onto the Turnpike remain in place. River Road will be reduced to a single lane controlled by flaggers intermittently for access to the construction site as well.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike continues to progress through Stage 3 of construction for a multiphase project involving the total reconstruction and widening of two miles (Milepost 12 and Milepost 14) of the Turnpike’s east-west mainline nearest the Exit 13 Beaver Valley (Beaver Falls/Ellwood City) interchange.

Construction is expected to be fully completed in September 2027. Additional updates and pictures can also be found on the PA Turnpike Construction Page link.
