Joan Adele Birkins (nee Nelson), 93, of Ellwood City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 31st 2024 at her home surrounded by her family.
Joan was the daughter of the late Carl and Ruth (Hansel) Nelson. Joan was born in New York, NY on August 7th, 1930. She married the love of her life, the late Ransom Parker Birkins, on September 4th, 1948. A stay-at-home mother until all her children were in school, Joan found a fulfilling career as the Director of Administration for Home Equity in Wilton, Connecticut. Once retired, Joan moved to Ellwood City after her daughter Dawn moved to Ellwood City. The things that brought her the most joy in life were being with her six children, her 13 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. She loved cooking and loved entertaining her family and friends. Joan also loved decorating, crafts and painting. She found great friendships at Challenges in Ellwood City and was an active member of Lillyville Church of God in Ellwood City. Joan brought much joy to everyone she met.
A loving mother, Joan is survived by her six children, Ransom Parker Birkins Jr. (Jan) of Delaware, Dawn Santagata (Anthony) of Ellwood City, Valarie Birkins of Arizona, John Birkins (Debbie) of Connecticut, Gayle Ralph of Connecticut and David Birkins of Connecticut.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 52 Years.
The family would like to thank Valerie, Ashleigh, Maria and Sharon of Family Hospice for their care, kindness and compassion while caring for our Mother.
Following Joan’s wishes there will not be a public service. The final arrangements are entrusted to the Joseph A Tomon, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 97 Grim Avenue, Ellport. Private funeral services will be held in Cold Spring, New York.
