The bottom of the lineup helped Riverside cruise to a 11-1 mercy rule victory over South Park in the WPIAL Class 3A Quarterfinals on Monday at Neshannock High School.
Sam Barber, Sean Hayes, and Christian Lucarelli combined for six of the Panthers’ 10 hits in the victory. The trio combined for three RBIs and two runs scored.
Lucarelli also earned the victory on the mound for Riverside, going the full five innings, allowing one earned run and striking out seven batters. He walked four and allowed only two hits.
Riverside got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Darren McDade smacked a bases clearing double and Barber followed up with an RBI single.
A RBI-double by Barber extended the Panthers lead to 5-0 after three innings.
Riverside poured on six more runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to evoke the mercy rule. Drake Fox collected a two-run single, Lucarelli an RBI single, and McDadd and Zack Hare each pushed across runs with fielder’s choices.
Barber finished 3-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run scored to power the Panthers offense. Lucarelli and Hunter Garvin each collected two hits. Garvin and McDade also doubled offensively.
Riverside (16-1 Overall) advances to the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals to face #4 South Allegheny on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 4PM at North Allegheny High School. South Allegheny (17-4 overall) knocked off Shenango 2-0 Monday afternoon.
