George Tita, formerly of Koppel, PA, died peacefully at the age of 101 on May 9, 2024 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Annapolis, MD.
Born in 1923, he lived through the depression, served in WWII, saw the landing of a man on the moon, and the witnessed the advent of the television, cell phone, PC and the internet – a life well lived!
George was preceded in death by his bride of more than 50 years, Anne (Gulevich) Tita in 2001, brothers John, Mike, and Nicholas, and sisters Susan Augustine and Ann Rossa. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, George E. and Lisa (Houk) Tita of Irvine, Ca, his daughters and sons-in-law: Marian J and Roger Soriano of Annapolis, Md, Carol S. and Charles Hammersmith of Ellwood City, Pa, and Tamara A. and Mark Stenger of Minneapolis, MN. Also surviving are grandchildren Jennifer Barber and her husband Shawn, Alexander and Elias Tita, Jon Henderson and wife Nancy, Sarah Souza and husband Eric, Ethan Hammersmith, Rachel Blessing and husband Matthew, Jacob Stenger and wife Katie. He will be forever missed by great grandchildren Anna, Lily, Simone, Natash, Kathryn, Decland, Harlow, Beckette and Brixton.
George served in WWII in France, Belgium and Germany under the command of Patton’s Third Army in the Tank Destroyer Battalion. He had fought in the battles of Northern France, Ardennes, Central Europe, and Rhineland. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal with 3 Bronze Stars. Upon his return from the War, along with brother Michael, he established Tita Brothers Machine and Tool Co.
A lifelong member the of the American-Carpatho-Russion Orthodox Diocese of North America, he was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Ellwood City, and then St. Nicholas parish in New Castle, Pa. He was bestowed the title of Archon by the Ecumenical Patriachate of Constantinople for his good and faithful service to the church.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 17th, 2024 from 9:00 am until the time of the service at 11:00 am at the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. with Father Richard Sally officiating. Entombment will beat the Locust Grove Cemetery. Members of the Veterans Honor Guard are asked to meet at the cemetery on Friday by 11:45 am to render full military honors.
