Defending Champion Panthers Defeat Rival Wolverines

Ellwood City couldn’t keep up with defending WPIAL and PIAA Champion Riverside and fell 17-2 on Monday afternoon and Sanders Field.

Riverside got on the board in the top of the first inning after Bo Fornataro homered to center field, scoring three runs, and Christian Lucarelli drew a walk, scoring one run.

Riverside added to their early lead in the top of the second inning after Ellwood City committed an error, and Sam Barber hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.

Riverside added one run in the third, three runs in the top of the fifth on a home run to left field by Zack Hare and poured on seven runs in the sixth inning.

In the sixth, Christian Lucarelli hit a solo home run to left field, Hunter Garvin drew a walk, scoring one run, Zack Hare singled, scoring one run, Ryan Widmaier induced Sam Barber to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored, Kayden Clyde drew a walk, scoring one run, and Sean Hayes singled, scoring two runs.

Lucarelli earned the win for Riverside. The standout pitcher allowed three hits and one run over four innings, striking out six and walking one.

Nate Kennedy pitched four innings in relief for Ellwood City. The reliever gave up five hits and six runs (three earned) while, striking out five and walking one. Owen Andrews took the loss for Ellwood City Varsity Wolverines. They went two-thirds of an inning, allowing four runs (two earned) on one hit, striking out one

Ryan Widmaier, Joseph Roth, Isaiah Lutz, Jordan Keller, and Nate Kennedy each collected one hit for Ellwood City Varsity Wolverines. Jordan Keller went 1-for-1 at the plate as they led the team with one run batted in.

Riverside amassed 11 hits in the game.

Christian Lucarelli, Sean Hayes, Zack Hare, and Bo Fornataro each collected two hits for Riverside. Zack Hare led Riverside with four runs batted in. The first baseman went 2-for-4 on the day. Hunter Garvin led Riverside with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating eight walks for the game.

The rivals are pitted against each other on Tuesday in the second game of a home-and-home series, with Riverside hosting Ellwood City at 4:00 p.m.
